City league record - with & without Grealish starting

Wasn’t Iheanacho statistically the greatest goalscorer in history for a while when he was at City?

I think it's a combination of factors.

I think it's clear now that Grealish brings incredible rhythm and balance to the team. He sets our tempo while still progressing the ball - see our second goal against Chelsea in the League Cup last week for an example. When he's not there, I think we miss his ability to brings things down a notch. He brings a kind of control that nobody else does. In the games he's not started this season, the "lack of control" is something Pep has mentioned in his press conferences.

But the other factor is that when Grealish doesn't play, De Bruyne, Bernardo, and Gundogan often play together and Foden gets played in his less dangerous position on the left side. It creates a bunch of problems.

We've won games without Grealish this season. The 4-2 against Palace, which saw us line-up with Mahrez and Foden on the wings with De Bruyne and Bernardo in midfield. Mahrez and Cancelo were taken off at 1-2, replaced by Gundogan and Alvarez. There's also the 6-0 against Forest, where we lined up 4-4-2 with Haaland and Alvarez up front.

But I maintain that, for all that Grealish needs to improve his individual G/A contributions, he makes up for his shortcomings by being such an excellent team player. I don't think it's a coincidence that literally everyone in our attacking line-up plays better when he's involved from the start (see the 6-3 over United).

Last season I think we missed him in games like Spurs at home (lost 3-2), Leicester at home (won 6-3), Villa on the last day (won 3-2), and a few others. All of those games descended into total chaos and the one thing they had in common was a lack of Grealish.

The games we've lost, we've started Bernardo on the right wing and had Gundo in midfield. Silva is wasted out on the wing. Against United we played Grealish left, Foden right and ripped them a new one. I don't know why he wont play this more often.
This. Spot on.

Unfortunately Gundo being shoehorned into the midfield with KDB and Rodri is the biggest issue. This then puts Silva right wing, where he’s not as effective and we lose his buzz in midfield. Also means Foden goes out left where he’s pretty good but better for us on the right. The front 6 should be a midfield of Silva, Rodri, KDB and Jack, Haaland, Foden up top.

Bloody hell. Didn’t expect people to be so desperate to play down Grealish playing an important role this season.

He isn't a charm, Zinchenko wasn't a charm Both important parts of the team. Playing down Grealish's contribution to our team and it's results is ridiculous.
This thread is about winning with him v not winning without him , not his performance thread, people insisted we won loads of games because zinchy played in them but that wasnt right either

Of course it's right,we saw last week how difficult it is with 10 men, we can't and don't carry passengers. When we win games it's because of those that played. Is it a coincidence when he doesn't play possibly to some extent, but then after the Newcastle game Pep said himself we suffered because of the lack of control Grealish not playing caused.
