Blues set for Sturridge offer
Chris Bailey

April 06, 2009

CITY are still hopeful they will keep hold of promising striker Daniel Sturridge in the summer.

The talented teenager made a brief substitute appearance against Arsenal on Saturday following injury and the Blues are ready to put together a 'take it or leave it' package thought to be in excess of £40,000 per week.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are both awaiting the outcome of the youngster's last-ditch talks with the Blues hierarchy. Hughes has made it clear he would like Sturridge to stay but the 19-year-old is out of contract in the summer and free to talk to other clubs. City would receive compensation but it would be a fraction of his future worth.

And Al Jazira, the Abu Dhabi club also owned by Sheikh Mansour, is ready to send their best juniors to train with City's Academy over the closed season.

And, what does the last sentence of the article have to do with the rest? Good journalism C Bailey! :)

I really hope Studge makes it and I hope its with us but £40,000 a week is too much in my opinion for a player who has had his share of injuries, made very few first team starts and has yet to complete 90 mins. If he turns this deal down then there should be no further offers. If Studge is good enough then he would know that he will be renumerated accordingly as he grows his status, If he aint good enough then he is probably best to refuse all our offers because one thing that is certain is that in the coming years only the very best will make our first team, maybe he doesnt fancy the challenge ?

this is very true...he appeared in the last three seasos for us...and still has only 5 goals in 11 starts and 16 subs...he has a poor injury record...but if he grows out of the injuries like lots of young players do he could be around full time for years..and psending 40 or 50 grand a week now wil seem a pitance to what he could be worth to us in the future

£40K pw is a lot of money but if he was to sign for say 3 years it is only £6 million over the course of the contract, the flip side of this is he goes and we have to sign a replacement, there is not a cat in hells chance we can sign someone as good as Sturridge for less than £6 million inc wages over the next 3 years!

I honestly think Sturridge can be Englands number 1 striker for the next 10 years or so if he is given the opportunity at City and for this quality of player £40K pw is nothing in todays market. I would give him what he wants and have done with it because I think he is class, look at the teams that would be interested in signing him Chelsea and Villa, both good teams with good managers neither team would be interested in him if he was no good!
