City responsible for Manchester's football identity

According to a newly-published paper written by historians Gary James and Dave Day, when Billy Meredith scored the winning goal for City against Bolton at Crystal Palace, he sparked an obsession with the game in Manchester that still burns brightly today.

Thanks for all the positive comments, my paper is now in the top three most downloaded for that journal. Thanks to everyone who has shown interest in it and I hope you've all discovered something of interest.

I've been told the paper won't be free for long, so if you've not read it yet here's the link <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14660970.2014.961378#tabModule" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... #tabModule</a>

Cheers

Hmmm...

If only you'd grown a beard, adopted a Cork accent and stuck a head on Peter Schmeicel, you'd be in the top one...

Dear Mrs James,
Gary is nice enough lad who has worked hard, this past term but he needs to apply himself more, next term, if he really wants to succeed. I recommend that he practices his scowling for three hours a day and does something "real" like kneeing Bobby Charlton in the goodies at the next Pride of Manchester awards.

Yours,
Mad4City

PS: His lack of swear words is fucking deplorable.

Hope you've got big front gates Gary, the MIBs are not loving the article at all.

Skimmed the article, seems interesting. Worth downloading and having a proper look. Well done.

Very interesting, Gary. Congratulations.

It's interesting to see the prices of tickets back then.

City took £500 in Season-Ticket sales. One SC costs more than that now.

Thanks for comments. Yes, a few points that haven't been getting the headlines from this research are the price of tickets and the emphasis on attracting women and boys to games. The boys stand is something the club could look at replicating - a space for unaccompanied early teens to 16 year olds to get them into the habit of going with their mates. It would help develop atmosphere.

Ticketing - the range of prices was enormous with the equivalent of a couple of bags of sugar through to the weekly rent for a decent 2 bed terrace in Gorton. There was no corporate hospitality as such - the most expensive seats were upholstered though!

The paper is still free to download at the moment, though I've been told it won't be free for ever, so if anyone is interested please download it from here - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14660970.2014.961378" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... 014.961378</a>

Thanks again for all the comments. The article is already the most downloaded in that journal's history, so thanks to all who have shown interest.
