City responsible for Manchester's football identity

enjoyable cheers

Just wanted to pick up on something you put in that i've been pondering for a while now; your article mentions the transfer of Meredith to United - along with some other City lads - and mentions how this was generally seen as good for the city, that Manchester could continue to be a good footballing place as players strengthened themselves etc.

You also hear stories of how City and United fans used to, throughout the 1st half of the 20th century, attend each others' home matches when their team was away just to cheer on the Manchester team.

Now, this is undeniably due to the fact that a large amount of the players were very local lads, but i wondered when the real rivalries began to surface? have you ever done anything on the history of rivalry of MCFC and MUFC?

Oi, Shakespeare! You ever written any of them poems of yours about dogs? Only, I got a dog... Wire-haired Daschund. Lovely breed! I inherited her, yonks ago, from a bloke what died down the boozer. His widow wanted rid. Said she were allergic. Two year old woman. The dog not the bloke's missus. She were a make-up expert from Boots. Face like a colouring book. She gave me the willies just to look at her. Still, mustn't speak ill. She gave me dog and all. Lovely creature. Yappy watchdog, great with the grandkids! She's shovin' on now, mind. Right poorly! I was thinking somebody oughta do something before she finally pops her little clogs... to commemorate her, like. You know like write a poem. I'd do it meself but it'd, well... where would I... eeh, it's a lot of effort, isn't it? So, I were thinking you might do it for me, Mr Shakespeare?
Mr Shakespeare..?
Where the fork did he go..? Rude bastard! They're all rude, lazy good for nothing bastards, them poets!

(Sorry, Shemnel. I know you didn't mean it like that but that's what I got when I read your post. Apologies, again!).

I'll be on BBC Radio Manchester between 8pm and 9 tonight... Well in about 30 mins I guess. Talking about this research and the paper <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14660970.2014.961378#.VEUtcWK9KK3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... EUtcWK9KK3</a>

If you missed it here's last night's interview <a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0287ws0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0287ws0</a> on Jimmy Wagg's show. I talked about Manchester's football identity, ticket pricing in 1904, significance of football then etc. if you want to read my research on this then my paper is still free to download at the moment - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14660970.2014.961378#.VEZdmWK9KK3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... EZdmWK9KK3</a>. Thanks for all your support.

I'm about 60 mins into the show. Cheers.

A reminder that my research on what made Manchester a football city is currently free to download - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14660970.2014.961378#.VE9QpmIgGK0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... E9QpmIgGK0</a>
It talks of City's significance in forming Manchester's football identity and includes loads of snippets on tickets, Boys Stand etc that might be of interest.

My earlier paper on Manc football pre-City is also currently free to download - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17460263.2013.873075?src=recsys&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1 ... rc=recsys&</a>
