Pretty sure I'm the first one who got this thread out - did a search and everything. Sorry if duplicate.

Not exactly a world-leading source, but an interesting proposition. It has been talked about before (we almost bought Royal Mouscron in Belgium before they were wound up, "supposedly", for example) but if this report is somehow right, we are actually close to closing the deal this time.

For those who can't click:

Moneybags Man City want to buy an entire club

NOT content with buying up enough players to fill their own roster, Manchester City are targeting the purchase of another European club to fill up too.
The nouveau riche Manchester side would like to purchase or heavily invest in another European club to act as a feeder to their Premier League operations - and it is reported they are "close" to striking a deal with an undisclosed established European side.
The side would act as a training ground for loaned-out young talent, as well as help those from outside the EU get the gametime needed to apply for UK work permits, as the emphasis at Eastlands switches from big money buys to breeding superstars of the future.

There is a fuller and less sarcastic story in The Sunday People

Thanks, found it now. For the record, for everyone else, here it is:

Manchester City are trying to buy a club in Europe – to bring through their next generation of top stars.

Mega-rich City want a suitable team to invest in, possibly sponsoring their academy or ‘development’ squad.

They want to send some of their current starlets – plus a handful of players signed from across the globe – to a club where they can play football at a decent level.

City’s policy-makers have decided that the big-spending on senior players cannot go on forever and there is a push to bring in young talent from around the world.

Many of these players – from Africa and South America – would be too young to get work permits in England, but could be allowed into other European countries where the rules are less strict.

Top youth spy Gary Worthington is in Mexico looking at a couple of Latin Americans who could be signed, but can’t come to England until they are capped.

Manchester United and Chelsea have tried the process in the past, with little success. But City believe it can work.

They are ‘close’ to finding a suitable partner and an arrangement that will not upset the football authorities who frown on ‘feeder’ or ‘nursery’ clubs.

If the Manchester wannabes come across the right outfit they could subsidise them by paying for their players to be based with those clubs and play for their sides on a regular basis.

It is an ambitious project, but City know they need a long-term plan to secure the next generation of talent, which will keep them at the top for years to come.

Interesting idea. Is it legal?

Yes, only rule is both teams can't play in one competition, so provided they don't win their league we're probably alright.

It'll probably be a Belgian team, if it's a work permit feeder.

....could be something in this - if we outright owned such a club we could move players there - but we could have them back when it suited -this would get them off our balance sheet and therefore it would help with the FFP regulations

Maybe they could loan us some of their own fans so we can get a proper continental atmos(bouncin/singin' in unison etc) going because certain games aside, it's fkin wank atm.

Liverpool.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Its a quality idea to get young talent a work permit, but from my experience in football manager 2008 its quite hard to get the player to sign for a lower league Polish side
