City v Ipswich 1981 FA Cup Semi

Went down under a pile of bodies when P.P. scored and had to be dragged up off the terraces by fellow blues. Thankfully I was too pissed to feel anything and came up laughing with delirium.
Looking back was a bit scary thinking about it
Still t'was indeed a great day

This was our first semi final since the 1969 game against Everton which I’d attended as a 10 year old with my dad. This time was on the coach with my mates. Still rate it as one of the best days of my city supporting life.
Not expected to win, Ipswich were strong favourites and were very well placed to win the league as well, so they were a fine team. City were City.
Stood in the Holte End fairly near the front with a great view of the free kick.
Celebrations at the end reflected what a massive achievement getting to the cup final was in those days.
Younger City fans I’ll find it hard to believe that we were singing you’ll never walk alone.

From what I remember we had far more fans there than Ipswich. As well as the holt end we had the witton lane stand and most of the other end behind the goal were blues.

They really only had the Holte end, the stand opposite Witton was very mixed.

Most of the Ipswich fans were families and when Villa fans appeared at the back in the Ipswich Holte End section you could hear scuffles breaking out as we were near to the fence.City fans sang to Villa " You darent come over here" I remember.

The place was awash with blues. We had half the Holte End (where I was), all the "normal" away end, and big ("massive", even!) chunks of each of the two side stands were blue as well. Utter pandemonium around me when Paul's free kick went in. I was right in line with it, about 10-15 steps up from the front. With the view I had of it, you knew it stood a decent chance of ending up in the net from about halfway on its path. Never thought back then that we'd end up waiting 30 bloody years for our next FA Cup final!

I mentioned earlier. The Holte End were waving en masse at the blues behind the opposite goal who waved back.

We arrived in Brum about 12 and parked up at a greyhound track and went to get something to eat. Tiswas finished at twelve and I was convinced we were going to bump into Sally James or Chris Tarrant! I was only 16 and hadn’t started drinking then either. Went in the Holte End remember Ipswich missing a sitter (header?) and the goal. Absolute pandemonium and unbridled joy.
