the nickname was originaly used by them as a sort of joke, then when they went into better times they dropped it, but it stayed around and eventually became a name used by us in the 70s or 80s.
Also calling a scouser a bin dipper or singing feed the scousers is inulting the general population and as you say poverty shaming, using a name for fans due to the club being close to being bankrupt 3 times in their history isn't, you cannot poverty shame an plc.
