City v Southampton post match thread

This is Ogden writing in the telegraph

With a two-goal lead, City choked the life out of the game in the second-half, restricting Southampton to half-chances.
City also barely threatened, with Toure booked for diving while attempting to win another penalty before Stevan Jovetic made it 4-1 on 80 minutes.

The home side coasted to victory, but the contentious nature of their win will linger on.

Did he watch the same game as me? Their keeper made good saves from tight angles against Dezo and Navas, Yaya hit the post, Beast had two one on ones and Jovetic scored.

I wonder what we'd have had to do to really threaten?
Spot on.
While I agree with him that the second goal was a turning point and that Saints played the better football between the fifth and forty fifth minute, he fails to mention that apart from their penalty they had no other shots on target whereas we had three great chances Nasri, Kolarov ( free header from twelve yards) and Dzeko (hit the bar) , oh and we scored a third goal.
Then In the second half he states we 'choked the life out of the game' when in fact we played good football, created numerous chances and scored another goal.
Pige'll probably be on the blower in five minutes.

Slow motion action replay actually showed the keeper made a fingertip save to tip it onto the post.

Just watching the extended highlights. I didn't see the first 30 minutes or so of the game, and from watching the highlights it looks like aside from the PK, Southampton hardly threatened through out the half. So are the claims that we were outplayed just being made by the usual doom and gloom people or is there something that has been omitted from the highlights?
Southampton had lots of possession, very fluid and sharp passing - enough for Olés from their fans and a bit of moaning from ours - call them doom and gloom if you like - at our misplaced passes. The Rodriguez injury seemed to make little difference. A couple of times they got a ball through to front players who, if they'd controlled it, would have been good chances, but Zabba's trip and the penalty was their only clear cut chance.

Early season and we would have destroyed Southampton after we went 1 up. Lately we seem to let the opponent have the ball and sit deep. Ok, we don't give away a lot (Hart had one save to make, which was their penalty) but honestly their forewards had 2 or 3 "half"chances that no doubt would have been put away by the likes of Sturridge or Suarez. We were slow and sloppy mainly due to the fact Fernandinho and Yaya had an off-day.
Even so, we could have been leading by a greater margin even if I take away our clear offside goal.

Second half we cruised and could ... no, should have scored at least 3. And if there was a moment for Negredo to get back to his scoring form, it was the time he given minutes on the pitch. He desperately needs a goal, but right now he's clearly forcing it and looks beaten whenever something goes wrong. Maybe he needs Aguero next to him. It's obvious he doesn't like to be the lone man upfront as for Dzeko he seems to relish it (despite his usual missed opportunities and misplaced first touches).

Was pleased with Kompany-Demichelis, Silva was great again, and Jovetic made himself noticed when he came on.

Finally Yaya was lucky to be on the pitch in the end as he could have had a red or could have been subbed by Pellegrini if it wasn't that we used all of our subs by the time Yaya overreacted to a (nasty) kick. Than again, Yaya seems to need a bad rehearsal before a good performance in a big game, so I expect him to be in topform next Sunday.

I wasn't at the game but I watched the whole thing on telly. Just watched the highlights. Yes, I honestly think they give a false impression, in that Southampton clearly had greater possession and generally knocked the ball around better in the first half. That said, they didn't actually make any opportunities out of that possession, and as has been said by others, Joe had very little to do through the whole match. There were no real moments when my heart was in my mouth in the first half, but I was thoroughly pissed off with the way we were being harried off the ball, and the number of our passes going astray. I think that the back four finally looks pretty settled, and there's no reason to change it against Liverpool.

You have to feel for the lad. I imagine he was crying equally because of his career as well as the physical pain. Meaning it was equal parts mental and physical pain.

Glad our crowd gave him a big ovation as he was carried off. Good luck to the lad.

We have had a few offside decisions go our way this season,Southampton obviously and Liverpool at home when they had a goal ruled out,but we have also suffered from a few away, plus a foul which wasn't given when Sunderland scored their winner,so the mushes can go and do a flying one in my opinion!
