Watching the training video it would seem that Gomes is the only newly established young player to stay with the first team now that most of the senior players are back - probably something promised when he signed rather than a reflection on how ready he's looked so far. I'm sure those that made an impression may get the chance to step up again once the Carabao Cup rolls around in September but it suggests that a lot of the players starting their pre-season this week will be going straight into the starting line-up. The only slight surprise for me is that i thought Douglas Luiz might be kept involved but maybe there's still a work-permit issue and we'll be loaning him out again.

The main things i'm not sure about are whether we might persist with 3 at the back, whether Foden might be back in the reckoning ahead of this game, whether Gundogan will be risked with that face mask and you could pick any combination of centre-backs really.
