City Women’s Team | 2025/26

Isn’t Aoba Yui's understudy?

Aoba is a right winger. We dont really have an understudy for Yui. I believe Lohmann has said in interviews that she doesnt mind playing deeper but only as part of a double pivot. Have also read that Shimizu can play there if needed (but havent seen any evidence myself of that).

Sorry.

I was getting my Japanese players mixed up.

The club is now playing a long term strategy. The squad profile looks nailed on for 4th or 5th in the WSL. The lack of European games will hopefully reduce the probabilities of serious injury disruption. With some good fortune in Cup draws they could bag a trophy, the FA Cup would be great. The opening of the new WTC and the new academy team (and the excellent Izzy C) will hopefully see numerous home grown local players become the future core of the senior squad. The litmus test remains the crowds at the Joie stadium, the real sign of organic progress will be a packed out Joie week in week out. Good luck to everyone for 25/26.

For once, I managed to post without mentioning Stanway, Walsh, Kelly, Weir and Bronze. Oh no, I've done it again...

So after the men's transfer window slammed shut we move onto Thursdays women's window deadline. Surely we will see some departures especially a goalkeeper - we have 5 listed which seems a bit over the top. A lot of younger players have recently been tied to longer deals but will they get many games this season so will there be loans? Will there be a surprise addition in midfield? I would be happy with Yui and Lohmann as first choice but the drop off from them is a worry against the more physical sides.

And finally will the myth that is Tara O'Hanlon ever play a game for us?

The recent friendlies suggest that its going
to be Yama/Keating fighting it out for the #1 spot with Cumings as third choice. Which surely must mean Startup will be moving on. Will be a shame to see her go as shes obvs a popular member of the squad. In fact her, Yama and Fowler were hiking in the peaks together over the weekend.

Oyama has already left on a loan. Id personally q like to see Murphy go on loan too.

Cant see any departures at the back as we already lost Aleixandri and were lacking strength in depth as it was was. Plus Knaak is injured.

No idea what the deal is O'Hanlon but im shocked we havent brought in a quality LB and havent been linked with one. Unless we're setting up differently this season.

Would be a dream to sign Clinton but I think its too big a deal to pull off so late in the window. Update yesterday was the City's interest has been known since Jan. If we're serious theres no point trying to do it on the cheap. Either pay up or move on. If we dont get it done now I think theres a good chance she goes to Arsenal for free next summer.

Hope so, because despite having 31 players we are still light there.

Did she go to La Manga? I looked at the final full squad photo and there was one person I couldn't place - I decided it was either her or Startup.

My crystal ball says that we'll be seeing Layzell at left back at some point this season.

Yeah O'Hanlon was there and looked to be participating in full training.

Really hope we dont stick Layzell at LB. Saw Fujino absolutely skin her out there in one of the videos from Spain.

ok - that suggests then Startup* didn't go which makes it more likely that she'll be off. (*unless she was hiding somewhere when the picture was taken)

It is odd that we have 4 right backs and no 'obvious' left back - maybe when Knaak is back fit a back four of
Casparij - Rose - Knaak - Greenwood perhaps?

(I'm having nightmarish flashbacks to Ouahabi vs Chelsea last year.)

Yeah I was wondering this, but Greenwood isn't that comfortable bombing up and down the wing. Maybe could play a more inverted type role. With Hemp shuttling up and down the wing a bit more.

Ouahabi has been a decent player but shes just not up to the task against the top teams. Shes another player with a great attitude and valued member of the squad so I dont want to be too harsh about her. And im sure her experience is important in the dressing room. But she isnt top drawer.

Was unlikely to ever happen but I’m gutted we didn’t get Olga Carmona. She’d have been brilliant at LB for us

This feels like a weird one

Another update saying personal terms agreed

It feels strange but maybe there’s some sense in it. Maybe Jess doesn’t feel like she’s going to get a game now we’ve stockpiled some wingers and her best position definitely wasn’t when playing in midfield.

We need central midfielders and Grace is a good player with a lot of upside. I’d still be gutted to lose Jess but out of all the positions we have, I suppose that’s the one that hurts us the least in the short term.

I say short term because Jess has a lot of potential

Id sign Clinton and let Jess run down her contract if she wont sign a new one. Wouldnt sell a player to that lot under any circumstances - I wouldnt give them so much as the shit off my shoes; I know thats the Bert in me but why load them up or help them in any way? Fuck em.

A lot about this makes sense. Id loathe to lose Park, espesh to United, but at the same time she regressed last year and we arent getting the best out of her. We also have lots of players who can play RW and/or 10.

Clinton in for Park would objectively give us a more balanced squad and Clinton is much happier playing the deeper postion weve been trying shoehorn Park into.

Prising Clinton from United this summer was always going to be at a high cost. This is the only way the deal gets done in my opinion. Saves United some face, saves us a lot of money and replaces a player being underused on the bench with one who can affect things on the pitch.

Reluctantly, I hope it happens.

Update: today's presser now pushed back to 2pm
