Rotation. A good player should be happy with 40 starts a season. It is plenty of games but also plenty of rest to keep players fit. Silva has suffered for the past couple seasons because he is overworked.

If we aspire to compete in 4 competitions a year you have to assume that we are going to be playing about 60 games a season. For that you need 3 outfield players for every two positions who are capable of starting and winning games against Champions League opponents. So we need 15 top class players.

Richards
Kompany
Zabs
Milner
Aguero
Rodwell
Silva
Clichy
Nasty
Yaya

That is ten plus the 5 new ones you mention makes 15.

I think it's interesting we mainly seem to be signing players of an age eg in their prime

by the time they see their 4-5yr contracts out there will be an expectancy the academy is delivering players ready for the first team

Good point. What are the rules regarding players who come through our academy, is there an advantage (numbers in the squad) in having more players from the academy?

They count as club homegrown if they are in our academy for 3 years before the age of 21, we need 4 club homegrown for the CL and another 4 homegrown in England for CL and 8 for Prem

I imagine the view is that we have a good window now, including a mixture of youth and experience (with more emphasis on experience) then we are strong enough to only need to add 1 or 2 in future windows, maybe 1 established star and 1 rising prospect a year - and then as you say we may start to see more top players coming through the academy in 5 years (or so) time
