Along with

Stiff Little Fingers: Inflamable Material.

Incredible album from a group of NI lads giving their account of what growing up in the troubles was all about. i was just a spotty teenage rebel back then, but it was almost a wake-up call as to how lucky i was just having to worry about Citys next game.

Clapton had already been through 2 "super-groups", Cream and Blind Faith and decided to stay out of the limelight, working with Delaney & Bonnie. He used their rhythm section to record his first solo album then, as the group broke up, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle and then Bobby Whitlock re-formed around Clapton. The band was going to be called Eric & the Dynamos but someone misheard, called them Derek & the Dominoes and the name stuck.

Whitlock & Clapton wrote some material and started recording it in August 1970 but there was no spark until the band went to see the Allman Brothers in concert. Clapton & Allman hit it off and Allman came into the studio to add the missing ingredient. The title track "Layla" was about George Harrison's then wife Patti, who Clapton was obsessed with. The album was released in December 1970 to luke-warm reviews and poor sales but eventually, after "Layla" was released as a single in 1972, came to be recognised as the classic it was.

Allamn was dead by this time following a motor-cycle accident in 1971, Radle died in 1980 from kidney problems associated with hs drink and drug abuse and Gordon was placed in a secure mental hospital in 1984 after murdering his own mother. He turned out to be an undiagnosed schizophrenic and is still in hospital 25 years later. Whitlock and Clapton fell out for many years but were reconciled a few years ago, playing together on Jools Holland's "Later".

I could play these three albums back to back. My favourite era of music. It's a bit simplistic calling it Grunge as Alice in Chains were leaning more towards Metal.

Three of the greatest voices in Rock music, Layne Staley dead, Chris Cornell selling out but Eddie Vedder still going reasonably strong.

autchre - amber
