As I'm sure many know, he's terminally ill and hasn't long left. He wrote a poem for the New Yorker a week or so ago, and it's both beautiful and heartbreaking:

Edit: I should add, the nominal subject matter is a tree in his garden given to him by his daughter.

Japanese Maple, by Clive James

Your death, near now, is of an easy sort.
So slow a fading out brings no real pain.
Breath growing short
Is just uncomfortable. You feel the drain
Of energy, but thought and sight remain:

Enhanced, in fact. When did you ever see
So much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls
On that small tree
And saturates your brick back garden walls,
So many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?

Ever more lavish as the dusk descends
This glistening illuminates the air.
It never ends.
Whenever the rain comes it will be there,
Beyond my time, but now I take my share.

My daughter’s choice, the maple tree is new.
Come autumn and its leaves will turn to flame.
What I must do
Is live to see that. That will end the game
For me, though life continues all the same:

Filling the double doors to bathe my eyes,
A final flood of colours will live on
As my mind dies,
Burned by my vision of a world that shone
So brightly at the last, and then was gone.

To know your time is near for me is frightening. We all say that we must make every second count, but we don't.I truly am shit scared of dying, not so much for never being here again but for not seeing my kids again.it keeps me awake.
I liked Clive James shows as I grew up,some wacky sketches and ads.I hope he's content in his final moments.

I only know him for his commentary on some of the old F1 season reviews from many years ago but they're rather good. It's basically him just taking the piss the whole time and makes even what many consider quite a mundane sport an entertaining watch.

"Unreliable memoirs" and the sequel "Falling towards England" were two of the funniest books I ever read. Right up there with Spike Milligan's war diaries as rites of literary passage in my late teens/early 20's. I shall doff my cap at his passing. A talented man
