Club Brugge (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Just seen Bruges's goal. Cretinous by Nunes. Cretinous.
Skip could tell him this, from on high, because I saw him do it at Maine Road over and over again: first awareness you have to have as a full back is, who's behind you as back up? No-one? It's a boulevard? Then you stand off your player a bit, jockeying him while waiting for reinforcements to arrive.
Pep, Nunes is not a defender. Whatever else he may be. Further up the pitch… maybe. Not there.
Oh, and maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but to anyone who's seen an angle from behind the goal, can't Ed be doing a bit better on that shot? At least a hand to it? It's a genuine question, because I've only seen the shot from the far side from it.
He did get a hand to it. Just not a strong enough hand.

Just drop KDB. Awful from him tonight.

I didn't think Foden and Bernardo/Nunes on the wings worked either. I knew we'd have a chance when Savinho came on and so it proved.

I am not very happy with Pep's tactics. I think he got it really wrong tonight. Why is KDB playing in these big matches? He flops every single time, and his lack of intensity costs us massively defensively.

What was Pep doing?

Sav was obvious from the start, why play Gundogan?

Needs to get his head from up his arse and play the team that picks itself.

Glad he seen the light and now we go on to hopefully pummel Bayern or Real.
Hopefully Savinho rammed home the message tonight. I didn't get that either. Gundogan did nothing. Neither did KDB. Both awful. Together they nearly killed us. It's not their fault, it's Pep's fault in selecting them.

That should be the last time Gundo starts a match. It won't be because Pep has his favourites and is stubborn but he is way past it.
The first half was just awful. He was struggling to get back every time they attacked.
The 2nd half was the team that should have started
What is the blind spot in regards to KDB? He was just as bad if not worse.

That system in the first half was a nonsense

Foden and Bernardo providing width ?

Akanji , Gvardiol & Nunes as a back three

What was Gundogans role , goal hanger ?

Stones in midfield ?

Beggars belief he did use the same system as Saturday , swap KDB for Marmoush and stones for Khusanov

Much better second half , the players looked more comfortable in somewhat their natural positions

Unfortunately he was brought back to play a support role but been forced to play most games from the start now. Sad to see a great player for us in past struggling but got to question why Pep didn't address a back up for Rodri earlier.
Yes it's sad but Pep is being so stubborn it is costing us.
It's the same stubbornness with Nunes, I know there are injuries but to keep playing someone out of position and getting punished for it is madness.

I’m trying to cling to the hope that he was keeping Savinho back for Arsenal at the weekend.

Marmoush and Savinho on the wings and Phil, Berardo and Kovacic in the middle.

I often watch a particular player for 5 minutes or so, I watched him in the first half and didn’t know whether to fall asleep or fucking cry. Sad it’s such a pity he came back for us and him.

Nunes was fantastic apart from the goal. Should have fouled him IMO

Superb sub by Pep at half time. Foden was getting the ball time and time again on the left but needed it to be a natural winger to take advantage

I accept kdb was poor but if I named everyone you'd get bored:-) Akanji was poor, Bernado is a different player, again his legs have gone. Pep refuses to chang.

What does Grealish have to do to get a game ? McAtee can't get on ahead of Lewis,

It’s crazy but some of this stuff is basics , don’t commit if you are not supported , at the very worst bring your man down and take one for the team

I remember going mad when cancelo dived in on Salah on the halfway line at Anfield when he was last man

Bernardo was excellent against Chelsea. You need the right set up. KDB's legs have completely gone. Brugge didn't attack very often but when they did, KDB didn't track back. He made no effort at all to get back for their goal. His attacking play was abysmal as well. Probably the worst game I have ever seen him play and it was against a weak opponent in a hugely important game.

I would select either Macatee or Lewis ahead of him. He should be coming off the bench to manage games, or to play against teams like Ipswich and Southampton. He should not play in these games.

Noticeable that they were happy to let Akanji have possession all the time because he never does anything with it

The formation was bizarre with no pace on the flanks and Gundo in the middle. He should have played 4411 like Saturday with Foden just behind Haaland. Thank fuck he changed it at half time.

Pep loves the old guard.
For me an eventual replacement for Pep would be luis Enrique.
A Barca lad who seems to have more balls than Pep with trusting younger players.
Pep is a legend but seems to worry about younger blood in the team.
Gundog and Kev have been amazing for us but look to be our problems at the minute.
The game changed as soon as we got Gundogan off.
