Club World Cup - Summer 2025

  • No FIFA profit: FIFA is committed to reinvesting all revenue back into the sport, with no profit retained from the tournament.
Up to you if don’t believe it I’m just pointing it out. I’m no fan of FIFA by the way.
I'm calling Bullshit.

They may well publicise that, yet Infantino and his corrupt organisation runs for profit over integrity of the sport.

Qatar v USA (PSG v Chavs) final will be fantastic for him.

The fans don’t want the tournament- there was over a million unsold tickets for the group stage alone and they can’t give tickets away for the semi final.

What about the hundreds of thousands that have gone to a game, or watched on TV.

The players don’t want the tournament as they’re being run into the ground and are suffering major injuries due to the insane schedules.

I think it's pretty obvious that players are keen to play and progress as far as possible.

The TV companies don’t want the tournament, as no one was willing to pay a bean for it, until the Saudis were handed the 2034 World Cup, in return for £2bn.

Two stations television this one, and I bet they'll have no problems selling the rights to the next one. I even suspect some of the media that have been slagging the tournament off will be trying to get to the head of the queue for rights.

The only person who wants it is the spiv Infantino for his ego, his legacy and because he’s jealous of the money and status of UEFA’s Champions League.

And many football supporters who have enjoyed the tournament.

I’ve got some people on the thread asking me to explain my reasons for why the competition is a sham and I’ve got some telling me to ignore the thread. I’m not sure what to do.

What I will say is…

@halfcenturyup is winding you up. There is no need to keep posting this stuff. If you are on a windup you are a genius.

@halfcenturyup do that again and you are in big trouble matey!

I. find it funny that many who were opposed to the ESL are happy with the global compomise.

Fluminese reach a lot of finls of the old format and the qtrs and semis are dominaed by european teams, so nothing new or spectacular has happened to improve the game.

This isn't progress it's same ol same old with the top teams raking it in.

until we see where the money being reinvested goes it is no more than what we already have.

in my opinion, and that is my problem with it, it is the same shit rebanded and being lapped up won't stop a club in panama going bust or save Wednesday or Brescia from a **** of an owner tearing them. apart

You understand the difference between the ESL as proposed and the CWC, I suppose?

You are so determined to be against the CWC that you are talking nonsense.

I wouldn't bother, matey. No point trying to convince people who don't want to listen.

I have supported city throughout it, same as I do the champions league, but I am not going to pretent they aren't designed for only a certain level of clubs and are for the good or the few not the many.

Just because we are in it we don't need to be loyal to it

As I say my issue is it being portrayed as something that benefits all of football, it doesn't it benefits the elite clubs globaly, including us, with an aukland city or such thrown in to legitimise it.

and I have better things to find to hate than a football tournament, like the rags or farage ;-)

It is a competition designed for the pyramid of the club game, but the South American club sides in particular have done very well. It's the first semi-final tomorrow and I hope Fluminense make it. If they do, it might undermine your argument a little.

we played fluminense in the final last year in fact in the last 5 finals a brasilian team has featured in 3 of them and 10 in the 24 years it has been going.

There has never been. an all european final in the history of the competiton this will be the first time 3 european. clubs have made the semis, before it was global with teams from asia, south america, oceana and central or north america making the last 4

seems this new format with increased Eupopean teams makes it less of a club world cup than before

The kind of people who believe that bull shit, voted for Brexit and think Farage is a jolly chap who has the needs of the working class at his heart rather than investment banks and hedge funds.

I’m loathe to agree with The Ghost or urban genie, but on this occasion they’re raising nothing but valid points! I actively got behind City and tried my best to get into it, but there’s been so much wrong with this tournament, I don’t even know where to start.
Can't wait for Infantino's look at me aren't I amazing speech after the final.

My family attended the PSG-Atletico Madrid match at the Rose Bowl. We had alot of fun. Despite the extremely hot weather and getting alot of stick from Atletico fans because we were wearing our City shirts (we gave it right back to them) - we had fun. Since we're from the US, we also had my experience having attended many UCLA college football games, soccer matches and the Womens World Cup final in 1999. As most of the people did not make it into the stadium until after halftime because of traffic - we got there 2 hours in advance of kickoff and made it in no problem. Concession lines were 45 minutes and they ran out of bottled water.

I think there's alot of things that went wrong in scheduling this tourney (poor kickoff times, dynamic ticket pricing, dodgy pitches), but I think its been entertaining. I regard it as a stress test for the world cup next summer. Since there's no Confederations Cup anymore, we get the CWC. I'm torn. I wanted us to progress in this tourney but I also knew that continued playing could be disastrous. Imagine if you're PSG? You got 3-4 days off after the UCL Final and then they had to prep for this. Its possible they make it all the way to the final which puts them playing on July 13th. They might get two weeks off before they start prep and then play the Super Cup on August 13th. And then they start league play 4 days later. lol crazy!

Hopefully us Yanks can get it sorted and deliver a good World Cup. We still hold the record for highest average attendance of any World Cup so I'm sure people will come. I agree tho that its a FIFA money grab; a death march for more cash, putting fans in a tough spot of wanting their club to succeed but also wanting them to rest.

That's the thing. Nobody seems to be able to start with any valid criticisms. Everything raised has been superficial nonsense and nothing to do with the nature of the tournament.

Try to list what you think is wrong with the tournament and let's see if you can do better than the two you mentioned.

Have you ever stopped to consider why there has never been an all European final before?

Yes because the changed format in 2005 or 06 to just the actual continental champions due to fixture congestion and indifference from clubs, so 6 teams, previously it had been. 8 and 12 were mited but faced opposition again from clubs.

It has took 25 years to get so many clubs on board, and until the prize money was announced luke warm enthusiasm from a lot of clubs, and fans alike.

some people are loving it some people think its an unecessary FIFA vanity project, both opinions are valid, shame some on here are only able to accept their opinion, as I have said if you are enjoying then cool happy for you, for me once city were out I couldn't care less, same opinion I have with the champions league.
