Club World Cup - Summer 2025

Just read a piece on the BBC website about this competition. It's the most contrived "competition" I've ever seen, teams 'selected' to take part rather than winning anything in particular to qualify, engineered to generate money every four years and nothing else. I get it that the clubs stand to make money but I'd love it if City and maybe a couple of other "big" teams declined to take part. It's been heading this way for a while but football is becoming an 'entertainment show' rather than a sport. I'd much rather watch a plucky lower league team play CIty in the FA Cup after winning their way through the rounds than Inter Miami play City because it's "box office' and Inter Miami have Messi.
I can't see big European teams refusing to take part on the grounds that some fans don't like it.

Cash is king and has been since 1992. Whilst parts of the criteria for being eligible to compete appear to be dubious (you could argue similar for the CL), I agree with the principle of having a global club competition that is meritocratic. Why should the stage be hogged by European teams playing in UEFA competition?

Again players may only ever get 1 opportunity to play in this in their career, held every 4 years same as World Cup format think people are looking at it in the current format as a annual winter mini tournament, this is going to be huge and the one everyone will want

This sounds a lot more likely than loss making DAZN spending huge sums on broadcasting this tournament. Effectively Saudi Arabia will be bankrolling it and getting FIFA off the hook as Infantino had said previously that it couldn't be financed out of reserves.

Edit: it's a down payment of the huge sums Saudi will be paying to get the 2034 World Cup
Great article that, had no idea re DAZN. Created by the poor, stolen by the rich.

On the plus side for City if we dont make CL next season then this income will be very welcome.

We qualified as one of the champions league winners in the last 4 years.
Chelsea the same.

Give me Inter Miami because I’d love Messi to play City in what could be one of his last competitive games/tournament.

Could be talking about the controversy of Inter miami inclusion due to messi playing for them and not because they have done anything to warrant their place
Inter Miami won…

The Supporters' Shield is an annual award given to the Major League Soccer team with the best regular season record, as determined by the MLS points system. The Supporters' Shield has been annually awarded at the MLS Supporters' Summit since 1999 (with the winners between 1996 and 1998 awarded retroactively), and has been recognized as a major trophy by the league. It echoes the practice of the top European leagues in which the team with the best record is the champion. Since 2006, the Supporters' Shield winner has earned a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.[A]

To qualify. However, had they not won it I’m not sure what would have happened as the route wasn’t confirmed until after they won it!

But they did win something.

Not true. Some teams did win something and others got in via their rankings coefficient. How many teams in the World Cup won anything? They qualify.

I suppose the World Cup is a good point, perhaps I'm just too old and cynical?
