To everyone saying "what were we supposed to do, he said he wanted to leave", I think we should have said "sorry lad, you have a contract and that works both ways since this is a professional football club and not a charity. There is not enough time to sign a replacement since you didn't bring in any offers sooner. So you will have to stay since we cant risk spending the first half of the season with zero attacking options on the bench, the club comes first". Instead of bending over and saying "well this makes our already thin squad depth even weaker and is the last thing we needed, but the most important thing is not the club, its that you are happy".
Or just fight for him a bit? Convince him his future is at City, let him know how highly he’s rated, how important the club thinks academy players coming through is, and give him some assurances that he’s seen as a big part of the clubs long term future.
Everyone’s had a job, feeling like you’re appreciated, have an important role and can progress as your career goes on is a big part of job satisfaction. Without that, anyone is going to start looking elsewhere.
Anyway it’s too late with Palmer, so I just hope he has a blinder every single week and drives home this lesson to the upper management. Theres a lot more Palmers in the academy and if him being let go and then becoming a world class player elsewhere is what it takes to make the club learn to value them a bit more, that’ll be fine.
