Colin Bell

Good read.
Whatever has happened over the last few years and whatever may happen over the next few years this club will only ever have one King. Legends aplenty I hope, but only ever one King.
I’m 31 so never got to see CB. I’ve seen the videos and I’m well aware of his talent, but everything I see in Bell, I see in Silva too. Obviously he’s not going to get even halfway near Bell in terms of appearances and goals, but on the pitch and off it they seem very similar

I don't know why people compare Colin Bell & David Silva as they're completely different players. A better comparison is between Bell & De Bruyne but possibly the best for those who never saw Bell is with peak Yaya Toure, although Bell didn't need a sit-down and a few gulps of oxygen after a 60 yard sprint like Yaya did.

Colin was a complete one-off. I was privileged to have seen him throughout his City career and he remains my favourite all-time City player, despite the very stern competition he’s had over the last 10 years or so. Still, I am ‘that fan of a certain age’.

As I am. People must remember that football was totally different. Muddy, frozen pitches, footballs like lumps of rock. He made it look easy.

till the day I die he will always be the king. The closest I have seen to him in modern times is frank lampard

There must be quite a few of us "of a certain age" on this forum.
I remember Colin's debut - for Bury. Naturally, he scored. Unfortunately, it was against City, at Maine Road. City equalised through Harry Dowd, who broke his finger and was playing on the wing.
If I missed 5 games in his City career, that's all, as it was when I was single.
Up until the current crop, he was simply the greatest City player I ever saw, and he's still in the top 3 or 4.

Oh, and I must admit that there was a tear in my eye just after half time on 26 December 1977.

Fantastic article and I think we should pay homage in song every home game to the king and Tony Book and Mike Summerbee while they are still with us. They attend every home game so would hear it.

The Colin Bell song I'm sure everyone knows.

" We'll drink a drink a drink to Colin the King the king the king for he's the leader of our City team! He's the greatest, inside forward, that the world has ever seen!"

Tony Book. " Tony Book's blue and white army!"

Mike Summerbee. " Sha la la la Summerbee." Some added, " Who the fucking hell is he? The greatest centre forward in history, United one, City three!" He played centre forward for a short while.

Simply the greatest player I had the privileged to watch at Maine Road.
He had the lot skill, goals, tackles and an engine in him that kept him going the full 90 mins.

He would walk into any City team past or present such was the player he was.
