I'm 27 and studying the Extended National Diploma in Horticulture. It's a full-time Further Education course. I'm one of only three of twenty-eight students not eligible for financial assistance for the course. Everyone else is on EMA, ALG or at least gets all their equipment and PPE gear paid for. I went down to part time hours at work in an effort to effect a career change. It was my choice. That said, I can't tell you how fucking galling it is to be put in a presentation or other group with 16-17 year old dicks (like my sister) who do not give a fuck and get it all free. There are other older guys on our course who are desperate to get off the dole, want the qualification more than anything and bust a gut to get the work done.

This month the college shut our site library due to cut-backs and in the same week revealed that as of next year the course fees would rise from £1500 a year to double that.

Well, I don't know what it's like over there, but here in the States it's nearly impossible to get a decent job without a university education (we use college and university interchangeably here). I just graduated in December with a business degree, so I know it sucks, but I can also tell you it's worth it in the end. It's only a few years, after all. Now I'm getting ready to start a great job with excellent pay and benefits, but if I hadn't gone to higher education I wouldn't have had a chance at this.
