conn having a dig again

A socially awkward misfit, which is why he works for the Guardian.

He can no longer regale his champagne socialist pals at dinner parties with his badge of convenience of being a down-and-out City 'supporter'.

Guys like him revelled in it, positively basked in the self-awareness of being that little bit 'different'

His writing has a complete stench of embarrassment about it.

His embarrassment is his own, not City's.

Very well put tolmie and absolutely spot on.

I know what you're saying Tolm but think you're picking the wrong horse with that one mate. You absolutely nailed it earlier though; Conn was somebody who positively revelled in supporting the down and out City.

It's why he is now a FCUM supporter and is bringing his kids up this way. He freely admits by the way that he is no longer a City supporter.

My problem with Conn is incredibly simple - his position makes absolutely no sense. Unfortunately I can only communicate with him via Twitter say never get the chance to really flesh things out but his entire position is hypocritical and imaginary bordering on the wilfully ignorant. In particularly his "when I was a lad" stuff, talking about how all the younger generations should do this or that to "regain the game" is insulting.

For all of his focus on the history of Manchester, Conn continues possibly the longest tradition within it; being a middle aged, middle class man telling the young, working class what they should and should not like, with an all knowing tone of "I know what's best for you".

I sincerely apologise if this comes across as anything but a question, and feel free to remove it if it has crossed the line.

Are David Conn and Colin Schindler both Jewish?

Without wanting to smear either man, I have plenty of experiences of media in America where anything with an Arab backer is just ridiculed.

same Colin Schindler?

To be honest, it was more with regard David, than Colin.

I'm taking a leap of faith here that Schindler is Jewish!!

City had/has a huge Jewish following, apart from the two mentioned, I just don't see or hear any gripes from any of our supporters about who our owners are or where they happen to be from?
There aren't any gripes which renders your earlier point potentially offensive frankly, although I'm sure you didn't mean it to be. This crap gets trotted out every time either of them makes a comment and it's just a red-herring at best and ignorant, racist crap at worst. I'll happily accept you're in the former camp tolm.

Both Conn and Shindler are Jewish but neither of them are practicing Jews and both married out of the faith. There is, I agree, a problem with Americans and the public perception of Arabs as they seem to have this belief that they're all itching to fly planes into the White House. That (or the correction of that belief)is I'm sure, is at least part of the reason our owners have elected to go very public in the USA with NYCFC.

I also know that Shindler and Conn were equally upset about Thaksin's ownership of our club, albeit for different reasons. So does that imply they're simply xenophobic?

Incidentally, it's a different Colin Shindler who wrote those books.

Might be slightly off-topic but there's a debate on foreign ownership in the pl on BBC sportsday and this lad hit it in a nutshell:
Robert Allen: It shouldn't matter what nationality the owner is; judge them on their record instead. There are good owners and bad owners, their nationality is utterly irrelevant.

Conn, Schindler et all should pay close heed.

I am prone to sweeping bullish statements when it comes to politics/religion/various, and was the reason for couching any inferences, as there are plenty of people out there who can slice and dice you with their superior knowledge on matters.

It's also why I tend to just post on threads like Curry and Scarlett Johansson in The Cellar!

It was simply from trying to rationale how someone's particular upbringing can even subconsciously, taint their viewpoints?

I think you have the correct handle on Conn, however. There is a romanticism (And Olly Holt is guilty of it too) trying to be different, just for the sake of being different.

Never mind 'Richer than God' there is no God;)

Apologies to all you God people out there ;)

I call that attention-seeking, but I might be being slightly unfair.

Hoped it would come across better. I've got loads of Jewish friends and they seem like normal human beings;)

You know more about them than anyone on here, so that puts all comments at a disadvantage.

I think both of the men we have cited have backed themselves into a corner because of their previous. Sadly, it seems no matter what we go on to achieve, or our owners invest in, it will never be enough and they can derive no enjoyment from it.

Which actually makes them no different to a United fan.

Re my media experiences and some of the prejudices I have encountered. I do see it over here, although, like you say, America is scarred for good reason.

I had friends working on the Dubai Ports deal which would mean them taking over NYC entry points etc, incredible how the media can mobilize a narrative which can taint something which is deemed unnacceptable.
