Connecting flights/ luggage question

Question unrelated to your enquiry but why did your son decide upon such a convoluted means of getting to Oz? Did it work out significantly cheaper?
It's not actually that crazy. He's avoided any of the hellholes like Heathrow or LAX. Hong Kong is a nice airport to change at so it should make for a decent trip.
We once did NZ - China- Frankfurt- Manchester for the same reason. A little more time in the air but much less hassle and that was with Swiss

I know a girl from New Zealand. Last time she flew home, she went:

Manchester- Copenhagen- Heathrow- Kuala Lumpur- Auckland.

For some reason, which I don’t understand, it worked out cheaper than booking the exact same trip but starting it from Heathrow.

There are massive savings to be had, especially in Business class starting outside the UK. It's very likely the MAN-CPH flight was a one way separate booking and the actual long haul ticket "started" in CPH.

A few years ago, we did Dublin-London City-New York-LAX-Honolulu-LAX-LHR-Dublin for £1150 in Business and First class. The same ticket without the Dublin start and finish was over £5k.

Just before COVID we got ourselves to Amsterdam and went AMS-LHR-Joburg and return in Business for £1100. Starting at LHR and getting on exactly the same plane to/from Joburg was just over £3500.

You have to get yourself to the starting point separately but a night in Dublin and Amsterdam before starting the trip wasn't the worst thing in the world.
