Conscription never really worked anyway at least in peacetime. It was abolished in 1960 (different times). The army had only 2 years to train up young men the majority of which were not fully committed. Too many square pegs in round holes.

Yup Putin will be loving what’s going on in America for the presidential election. Trump would stop all the funding and pull back on NATO leaving Europe having to come together to deal with Russia. Feels like they’ve been biding their time waiting for 2025 whilst stalemating Ukraine.

The likelihood of needing conscription is very low. NATO can field a force of trained troops, without reservists in excess of 3.5m. Even without the US it’s over 2m.
On the basis that the defender typically has a 3 or 4 to 1 advantage (depending on what you read), Russia would need to mobilise a minimum of between 10.5m and 14m trained troops, which is not going to happen.

To me the only scenario where conscription would be really necessary is if there was a world war, with an axis formed between Russia, China and possibly Iran. But under these circumstances everyone is fucked.

Appreciate that the orange idiot who unbelievably looks like he will be getting another shot at the Whitehouse is not overly keen on NATO.
