Conscription

T
Making out that todays youth arent as tough as you guys.
Nowt tough about coming home in a box mate.
Any conscription and my son would be hod in the cellar.
I’ve got 4 lads mate and I’m glad none have gone the military route like I did..
Every generation of squaddies believes they had the hardest time … The youth of today are far more savvy than we were and not as sheeplike either…
It’s not about being hard, I’m glad your lad isn’t in the forces..

If you had served when I did you would understand where I’m coming from..

Says the bloke going off what's said on a forum and social media.

And just refuses to accept actual facts posted by multiple sources online.

I won't be replying back to you now. Embarrassing
Not once said my point was based on what’s posted on here but what the actual reality is on the ground in Europe.

You continue to push the Russia is a superpower military wise yet the facts don’t bare that out as it witnessed in all its glory online.

I asked you several pertinent questions to challenge your stance, which you didn’t attempt to give a proper answer.

So I will try again.

Why has it not simply squashed Ukraine like a fly?

And if they are so well armed why would a superpower have to

Conscript civilians to fight in Ukraine?
Arrest those fleeing to avoid conscription?
Use antiquated artillery?
Not equip those on the front line with basic clothing, food or equipment?
Beg weapons from other countries?
Commit multiple war crimes
Sack Generals for not winning in Ukraine?

I look forward to hearing your answers to those

Read somewhere that apparantly Finland is a bad place to invade based on the mountainous terrain, the roads and the fact that every Fin has a rifle and knows how to use it......
The key Finnish defence strategy is to resist and hold until help arrives. Now that they're part of NATO their participation will be massively expanded, especially given Estonia (another at risk NATO member) is only across the water.

Perhaps their most famous tactic is dispersion where assets can be launched from anywhere such as from roads and that kind of thing. The RAF took part in activities to practice the same in Finland last year. It's great to watch.

Russia hasn't got the resources to fight any war against NATO let alone sustain an invasion of a very well protected country like Finland. NATO surrounds all of the territory in southern Finland and an attack on Northern Finland would be impossible because like you say the terrain and landscape would make logistics impossible.

Maybe we can think about offering national service (paid as per regular army) as an alternative to prison time.

Gang and knife crime seem like a win win for all concerned. Got to surely turn more people around than just locking them up and waiting for the cycle to repeat. Probably cost neutral as well, £45k to bang someone up in an already overcrowded prison and what £15k plus board and lodgings for a solider? They can learn a profession as well…

I take your point but my feeling is that the best soldiers are those that volunteer. what's needed (again imo) is a recruitment and retention strategy.

That said, since my days in the service (RN), things have changed. I was grateful for the job security and happy to commit to 22 years to earn a military pension.

I think today, youngsters are wanting freedom of choice to move about jobs and not commit to a one stop career
