May not be Manchester, but who's to know (unless the ''Manchester'' refers to a style of cap, rather than the corduroy)?

Thanks jimharri, clever link is that!

I get the impression that the "Made in Manchester" thing is important to them.

Failsworth Hats. Crown Street. Failsworth. Manchester M35 9BD

Failsworth Hats Ltd has been manufacturing ladies hats and men's hats since 1903 and has two design and manufacturing teams in Manchester and Luton.
As a successful 21st Century hat manufacturer they bring together top quality design and a global procurement and production strategy. Their teams of in-house accessory designers create styles for domestic and global markets, for fashion, retail, trade and corporate business. Failsworth Hats remains one of the largest headwear suppliers in Europe.

Their website is down at the moment but you can find corduroy hats made by them on other websites. The Hat Company for instance:
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.thehatcompany.com/failsworth/330-mariner-by-failsworth.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.thehatcompany.com/failsworth ... worth.html</a>

Gosh, I once got shown round Failsworth Hats years ago - quite bizzare!

on a similar touristy note, when I had a german exchange student staying over at school she had a request for an egg coddler... needless to say I did not have a bloody clue! pre-tinternet we spent the entire time she was over here asking for egg coddlers - eventually found one in kendals.

Incidentally it's like a porcelain pot with a lid that you stand in a pan of boiling water, place the egg inside and you get a strange mix of boiled and poached (well coddled, I suppose!) egg...

more fascinating facts next time, folks!

Thanks FuZzy, I think that's the nearest I'm going to get. They really wanted a shop in the City Centre but I'll give them the address and contact details of Failsworth and leave it up to them.

Cheers

I know years ago they used to call cotton goods Manchester goods for obvious reasons
They still do in Australia, the first week I moved here I saw a shop with a sign saying huge Manchester sale,in I popped to pick up Vimto,Joey Holt's and a dozen muffins and they were selling sheets, towels and tablecloths.

The Hersham Boys of Sham 69 fame quite enjoyed sporting the corduroy look, with their laced up boot ensemble.

That's when young people actually bothered with their appearance, unlike these slackers nowadays with their velcro fasteners and underwear on show - pull your pants up rapskallion I would say if they weren't so intimidating.

So a Manchester barm is a Corduroy muffin then.

Don't worry about it every thread always gets derailed on page 2 from the actual topic ;-)

The only thing that worries me now is whether it is a barm or a muffin. Why on earth hasn't there already been a thread on this?
