European Medicines Agency’s safety committee concludes that “unusual blood clots with low blood platelets should be listed as very rare side effects” of the #AstraZeneca vaccine but continue to say that vaccine benefits outweigh risk

Their press conference just started saying that. Half an hour of questions to follow.

Hope the timing was not yet another nobody checked who was doing what clash as it looks pretty silly to be planning to do both at the same time. As the European one was announced first.

And why the BBC cut into the key part of the press conference presentation to waffle needlessly is just terrible reporting too!

Surely all that had to happen was delay the UK conference until after and say that up front. Not say just a 'slight delay' in the start was coming. Then cut into the other one at the key part to reiterate they have no clue what the delay is or why. Looks amateurish on such a key matter.

No EMA recommendations on age or gender restrictions, but a note that
  • National authorities may provide additional guidance on the roll out of the vaccine based on the situation in your country.
which reads to me like we can expect a patchwork of country guidance in the EU

Looks like just an update to the included info?

This whole situation should give people confidence in the reporting systems in place and how seriously they are taken.

In some ways this EU report makes it worse imo.

If NO age related factors are emerging then this will make the age related differences in giving it to people harder to sell.

IT is basically saying the risk of clots is real and we are not risking it on young folks but you older folk had better have it as otherwise you might die.

I would not blame anyone preferring to have any other vaccine instead now.

Hopefully our scientists will be more helpful.

Well the regulator has said that those under 30 should be offered an alternative to AZ if available in our area. Personally, I’ll take the alternative.

What bothers me too is that we are now basically saying as we collected more data we agreed with what the EU found weeks earlier from less data.

That begs the question did they jump the gun in the EU or were we too slow despite having more data.

The balance of ages was a plausible reason why the EU acted on earlier data (more younger people had it there early). If that is null - why did we only spot this much later from more and longer use of the vaccine?

I'm on the fence about getting my second Astra Zenica jab. My arm is still tender ten weeks on and this clotting risk makes me wonder if another shot will trigger a worse reaction.

I do think this will sink the AZ vaccine sadly yes.

Indeed I may consider waiting myself now until they decide (as they will) they will not give two doses of AZ doubling the risk - rare as it is. Must be safer to have another version of the vaccine second on balance of risk.

Countries in the EU all had different strategies and rolled out their supplies as they saw fit, so data would be flagged at different stages. They are also still free not to roll out any vaccine if they have reservations. Younger women will now presumably be reticent about accepting the vaccine, especially once stocks of alternatives arrive.

I'd make sure it's reported via wherever you were jabbed / GP and keep an eye on the information that will now be coming out about what to look out for.

Hopefully just bad jab technique and fingers crossed you'll heal up soon.

Lots more people get & die from blood clots after catching Covid 19 than they do from having the vaccine
No vaccine or medicine is without side effects.
4 people in 1 million might get a blood clot from the vaccine , While 10s of thousands have died from Covid in the UK
Am glad Van Tam & his colleagues are on the ball & keep monitoring progress

Advice I saw was that if you've had first dose then you should receive second dose? Potential is much lower if you've already had the first dose.

I've had countless jabs in the past, ten weeks seems a long time to still not be right. It's an odd one.
