On January 11th, the 7 day moving average of daily new cases in South Africa was 19,042. Today it is 2,771.

On 19th January the 7 day moving average of deaths was 575, today it is 275.

Interesting, but then again I really don't know what this tell us without the following:

How severe is their lockdown/restrictions? Are these reductions more a cause of social restrictions than vaccines at this stage, or both?

How is their vaccination rollout process going? Has there been any or many as yet severe illnesses or death in people already vaccinated (talking people who weren't prior infected before receiving their vaccine)?

And, daft enough as it sounds, is their 'own' SA strain the dominant one within their own country? Or is the original or even the UK strain taken over as most transmissible over there?

We hear a lot about a South African strain, but so far I've heard little about what's actually happening in South Africa itself. Israel is newsworthy almost daily, for obvious reasons, but at this stage surely SA is worthy of very close watching to help us with what we're actually dealing with?

Couldn’t find much :

South Africa has recently passed the peak of a second wave of infections.

But scientists warn of another surge in the winter months, around June, so officials are imploring citizens not to drop their guard.

Do you know what mate, this holiday business is so fucking annoying. I’ve just had the misfortune of having to listen to Kate Garraway and Ben Shepherd grilling Matt Hancock on GMB about the so called mixed messaging about can we book a holiday this summer.

Christ, it’s insane, what is the fucking obsession about booking a fucking holiday when we are in lockdown? I wish Hancock had just said, ”are you all fucking thick?”, it’s just common sense. Why do they think it’s clever to try and argue the toss about politicians giving mixed messages - “Grant Shapps said this, Boris said that, you said this”.

Government have a lot to answer for at some point, we know that, but give it a rest. Take a risk of booking one if you want, or don’t. It’s fucking painful.

I agree mate. It’s pathetic. What happened to a holiday in a tent in Wales or the Lakes. Yes, I’ve been drenched a few times on those but if people are desperate to get away they can visit somewhere else in Britain (once domestic restrictions are eased for this Summer).

Mirrors my thoughts, hopefully the roadmap on the 22nd will be worth the wait and will put a stop to some of the constant questions around timings where there just isn’t a definitive answer.

Sure I miss foreign holidays and was also at the stage where European aways and breaks would be possible without impacting school time, however, that’s way down the list of priorities for the country as a whole. Too many entitled people with a voice while those impacted most on a daily basis are overlooked. As the old saying goes, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I wish they’d just come out and say no one in or out in 2021.

And if you are a British citizen stuck abroad, give them a deadline to get back and just shut up shop.

The message should absolutely be do not book a holiday abroad for the next 12 months if you want this country to return to normality. Not sure why the transport secretary brought UK holidays into it though.

The quotes I read he didn't tell people not to book, he advised caution because we know people need to be babied through this pandemic.

Feel dirty for defending a tory but Shapps comments have been so overblown
