By all accounts a particularly bad winter for flu is to be expected, and the NHS is already well behind in many other areas.

"Lock down for a couple of weeks to slow down the spread of flu to protect the NHS and save lives" is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Considering how accepting the general public has been lockdowns and curtailed freedom, i dont think its ridiculous to suggest that, with the right messaging, it could be done again in future.

Absolutely no chance is that happening with normal flu.

Even if they try it, it will not be adhered to.

The pub I was in earlier, this was very noticeable despite the signs. Loads of people moving around with no masks on.
Standards are definitely slipping. Alchemist in town yesterday was pretty much bang on with people following the regs to be fair, but in contrast to that I watched the match on Friday night locally in a pub beer garden. The landlady runs a tight ship but it was noticeable that nowhere near as many were wearing their masks when going to the toilet compared to previous visits to that pub. After the match ended, me and a mate went to the pub over the road and what was going on in there was an utter piss-take. People were queueing at the bar and wandering round the pub. The woman running it was rushed off her feet and had no chance of keeping on top of it. I was literally the only one who wore a mask when going to the toilet and was actually getting funny looks for doing so!

Sorry I’m not for this, how about getting the nhs good enough to cope, they will carry on doing this very bloody year if they can, people accepted there was a world wide pandemic, not a shit running of our health system.

Good to see people enjoying themselves and the pub making a few quid.

I can't take any threat of lockdowns over winter seriously. They aren't a viable solution to the problems which the NHS face.

As Covid was a novel disease and its taken time to learn, adapt and produce vaccines I can understand it, but these restrictions should be the only restrictions we face in a lifetime barring any unprecedented disaster.

doesn't matter - they all to go back to their day jobs and stop scare mongering everyday.
They want us locked up until 2025 this lot.

Of course it matters. 1 person who happens to be on the SAGE board is not the same as SAGE advising something. SAGE is a large advisory board.

Its on par with some people saying "the government said x/y/z" when one back bencher mentioned something.

There's a lot of mismanagement within the NHS, my mate was a Patient Transport worker at Tameside Hospital. When the pandemic broke all the medical staff were PPE upped to the hilt, my mate who was transporting patients with Covid got a face mask and gloves. He caught it, passed to his wife and she was severely ill but thankfully still here.

On another note my Dad has recently had an eye operation, he got three letters in the post on the same day, one confirming his op date, one cancelling it and one with the rearranged date, madness.

Was completely different in Feb. Nobody from England was allowed to travel to Scotland, nor stay anywhere in UK for leisure. This isn’t the same now. My car for example is MT70... but I live in Stockport so proves nothing and can’t be used when the area that can’t travel is so specific unless they are checking every car which they aren’t.
Unlikely to be in place long unless they plan to ban Londoners too shortly as well.
MT is not actually designating Manchester. All of the M combinations cover most of the North West. Including Merseyside. Indeed they were forced NOT to call it Manchester because of angry Merseysiders who felt insulted and they retrospectively referred to it as M for Manchester and Merseyside as angry people from Warrington were evidently not angry enough.

Even so when this system was introduced in 2001 they issued the combination MU up front (as not many people had MU initials and that is why they left the more common initials to use until later on). But people in Liverpool refused to buy cars with that mark in such numbers that the government were forced to stop issuing MU and have never done so since. You can guess why.

But MT - like all the other M combinations - could come from a very wide area not just Manchester or Salford.

Though MC has never had the same restrictions curiously.

On the number plate thing...mine starts with YC and is a brand new '21 plate, bought from a main dealer in Salford. I live in Stockport.

I had no idea the first two letters on the plate refer to where the car is from, is this actually a thing?

Edit - Google tells me YC refers to Yorkshire. It can't be that accurate then, dealer networks must bulk register plates or something, as I bought my car brand new and not from Yorkshire...

To my shock it is..

Often vehicles are bulk registered in a head office location. Or a manufacturer.Or distributer.

You will notice new Stagecoach buses in Stockport with the registration SK.

That is the postcode for the area but Stockport would normally have Mx registrations.

The buses are SK by pure coincience as they were registered in Scotland where they came from.

It is a needlessly baffling system.

But registrations always have been. Manchester before 2001 - believe it or not - had the letters N, NA. NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, VM, VR, VU, and XJ.

Go figure why. I have no idea.

If you are wondering how I know all this many years ago I had a job for a few months where I had to transfer all car vehicle registrations from card files onto the first computer. Then the size of an entire room! I soon picked up the system as it was so weird that I wanted to know why London got all the Ls and Liverpool had Ks and Middlesex got the Ms instead of Manchester. Salford was just given BA and RJ. Utterly random I assume. I could not work it out anyway.

London and the south bias even in the last century.

Well, every day's a school day.

Back on topic then, this seems like a completely pointless way of the police trying to track people from Manchester jibbing the border to Scotland.

I’ll be honest mate, I don’t wear a mask when going to the loo now in my local, it’s pointless. Take Friday night for example, I’m in the boozer with about 100 others all screaming at the footy with no masks on, but then putting one on to walk 5 metres to go to for a piss, what’s the point?

For me they are not helping people. every day one of them has to come forward and frighten everyone with doom laden forecasts - ffs millions are double vaccinated (I know it's not 100%), now they are advocating booster jabs and some suggesting winter lockdowns.
We were told last year that get the 2 jabs = freedom. You could argue some of the rules now are actually worse despite the mass vaccination, the travel rules for example. The Govt should not be ordering people how to now live their lives, people have complied for nearly 16 months now.
Sorry it's getting a joke.

I know what you mean. I watched the England game in a pub in Didsbury and very close to zero fucks were given to social distancing etc by anyone. Everyone singing and chanting etc, place rammed, but you're supposed to wear a mask when having a piss?

It was the first time I've been "out out" since probably Wembley last year. Felt good to be with my mates in a busy place getting pissed tbh. I've had one jab, pretty much everyone I was with had had both...if I've caught it from being there then, well, fuck it, not arsed now.

I've done more than my bit over the last year but it can all fuck off now, none of this shite makes any sense anymore. Get in the bin.

I’m firmly in the USA theory camp of double jabbed so get on with it.
