It's a relatively new thing, about 20 years, as far as I know there's not many Doctors employed in most work places so how does the back to work interviewer know if an employee is "fit to return to work"?

I did the course a few years ago (as a Manager of an engineering Help Desk) and the prime objective is to make employees feel guilty about taking days off for minor and made up illness. Any employees with serious illness are treated completely differently.
Sorry, but that company are being arseholes if that was their attitude. Most large companies have occy health and will be used, along with the hiring manager to help understand an employees, condition.

I was kicked off site not so long ago because, I wasn't deemed fit for work and the companies Ins wouldn't cover them if I were to further injure myself.

You might not like the rationale, but it is there to protect both parties.

Thread has been derailed too much by this now.

Was a listed company (Alphameric) but nearly 20 years ago so different times. With serious illness they did use Occupational Health, derailed thread just mirrors a chat in the boozer, start on one subject and end up discussing something entirely different, cheers.

I trust she did not call it that. There is no proof it originated in Britain and new ones as virulent seem to be springing up all the time as this virus mutates. Higher infectivity will be a natural strategy developed just to combat the measures globally to infect in the original way. It is no real surprise.

The UK government may have a lot to answer for but blaming this variant on it as the scourge of the world would be pretty unfair.

I see a tabloid says she did. Normally she has been pretty fair over Brexit but our response in dealing so tardily with its spread is certainly world beating in stupidity so I guess it is to be expected.

My friend who lives in Virginia called it something similar and said she was chided by her son who is an ER doctor working in the hospital in Seattle where the original US outbreak patients were taken from a rest home. He told her and she told me long before Britain reacted nearly a year ago that this virus was the real deal. So much - being American - she went straight out and bought up weeks of supplies, a hazmat suit and a gun.

I thought she was utterly crackers but then she is American. But two or three weeks later it became clear that her son knew what he was talking about. And my keenness to follow the data for myself began. I locked myself down about 10 days before Boris did anything. I think that is about my go to response now. Do what Boris will do when its too late on my own but before it is too late\

Anyhow her ER doc son told her not to blame Britain as the US have a pretty similar variant that is like it and spreading fast and these are popping up in a few places.

International travel may be not getting back to normal for a very long time. This will take more than vaccinating 24/7 in the UK to achieve 'herd immunity'' unless we plan sealing ourselves off from the world and living as an island self sufficiently until the planet catches up.
If Merkel said this then she is probably just repeating short hand that will be shared shared between Government Departments and Ministers on the continent and possibly wider, I reckon. People here have been very quick to show charts on the roll out of vaccines across Europe so sensitivities for a British audience probably weren’t high up Merkel’s priorities. FWIW, The more significant part of the article for me was that Germany sees restrictions still being in place until at least the start of April.

Thanks for sharing your story from the States and all credit to anyone who prepared early, even though the gun sounds excessive. We were far too slack but I happily ventured to the Manchester Derby at the swamp in March so I would probably have been almost as slow to react as our Government. I stopped working outside the house a week before our lockdown so I was a few days ahead of Boris.

Blackpool is very much at the centre of the perfect storm when it comes to Covid. Very high areas of deprivation in the centre and then either side of it in places like Lytham and Cleveleys a predominantly elderly population.
Don't forget Fleetwood with its high proportion of smokers, druggies and junk food addicts.

Wales data:

The Pop score for Wales today is 404 - down from 415 yesterday.

16 deaths (it was 17 last Tuesday)

1332 cases (it was 2069 last Tuesday)

Positivity is 12,1%

Wales vaccinations.

Was about 86, 000 yesterday,

Today the total is 91, 239.

So that is around 5000 in a day.

This certainly is not good enough from Wales who seem to have the lowest rate in the UK.

Difficult to seal us off from the world but seriously border controls across Europe - not just the UK - have been so lax its untrue.
Not enforcing a quarantine app to be installed on peoples phone to allow them to quarantine at home has been a major failure as well. No app then physical quarantine.
Same app for people to isolate as a result of test and trace.

The rate of vaccination in the UK is one thing we should not criticise. It is far beyond anywhere in Europe right now. And one of the best in the world. (weekly rates as of yesterday)

2500 given per million population versus 1566 for Denmark (second) and 1209 Italy in Third.

Germany is 15th in Europe at 572 - one fifth of the UK.

France is 21st at 340 - one eighth of the UK

My Dad had his vaccination last weekend. My Mum just texted me, she has hers on Friday. She is 79 so these eligibility criteria are indeed being interpreted a little by the health authorities.

This will completely change their lives with almost immediate effect. They just have to wait for the immunity to kick in and then all things that have been on hold they can do, albeit with due care and attention.

Is it after 5 weeks? (I’m sure that’s what I’ve read)

Just been to feed the ducks with my son on the canal near me. Its really busy everyone in each others way.
