What I would say is that I have barely been anywhere beyond my small cul de sac in the last 16 months bar the walk to get my three injections nearby. (Last years flu and two Covid).

Until I had to do about 10 days ago when my computer blew and family drove me around GM and to two separate stores via main roads and motorways.

I was very surprised how busy things were - the roads, the shops, the people many - but nowhere near all - wearing masks.

If I had not known we were under restrictions I would never have guessed.

I am wondering how much difference the official changes will really make to the ones most people seem to have made anyway,

So I assume you haven’t visited any pubs to see the lack of adherence to restrictions either :)

Next weeks lifting of restrictions won’t make a huge overall difference to cases in my view as lip service only is being paid by younger groups in particular. Cases will continue to rip through the unvaccinated & uninfected for a few more weeks before fizzling out.

Very difficult to know.

There are for sure many areas where restrictions and/or voluntary behavioural changes are continuing to limit contacts.

Just as an illustration, Google does a database, reported here. You can see the lockdowns clearly, and that we are nowhere near baseline yet eg in public transport use:



But how much will actually change on 19th, and how much any change will knock on to transmission rates, I certainly wouldn't feel qualified to opine on.

The Netherlands warns us that big impacts are possible.

In the UK. so far, 152,725 died of COVID. not with COVID, but of it, noted on there death certificate as main cause of death.

Never said people didn’t die of COVID. I’m saying now. How many people are dying of COVID. Not enough to justify continued restrictions considering that those vulnerable are vaccinated. Infections will never go away, it’s endemic, so we need to get on with life. People will die but not in great numbers.

New case figures down in the Netherlands since the 10,281 high on Saturday, with 9,369 yesterday, and 8,522 today. Of course, Sunday’s and Monday’s figures are notoriously inexact, so need wait for tomorrow and Wednesday for a clearer indication of the trajectory.

Rutte has apologized, however, for reopening the country too hastily. Turns out the lauded test and trace system that allowed entry to nightclubs was anything but rigorous; people could simply copy QR codes from friends’ phones and cavort the night away.

ENGLAND HOSPITAL DEATHS

Definite increase here in the three days at once weekend numbers - but still only moderate.

In these 3 days the reported deaths are 46 - last week it was just 24. Two weeks ago 21.

The most visible week to week jump yet,

8 July is on 21 deaths after just 4 days - the most since 12 April, Though 2 July was 22 at 5 days and is already up to 24.

This is currently the highest single day death number since 12 April which currently stands at 27

My son had a positive lateral flow test this morning, just waiting on the PCR result now. Gutted as that pretty much ends the school year for both our kids, so they’ll miss out on a few things they were looking to. We were also meant to be going up to the Lakes this weekend for my birthday which is a bit of a pisser. Ah well.

Sympathies mate. My son (13) was positive last week and is really quite ill with it. It’s a miracle that the other kids haven’t caught it yet. I feel like shit but keep having tests which come out negative.

It’s a fucking ballache. If one of the other kids gets symptoms we are isolating for another 10 days.

Did anyone notice the case from Belgium by the way. Reported yesterday but happened in March to an unvaccinated 90 year old woman.

She sadly died from Covid but had caught BOTH the alpha and beta variant at the same time from two separate people.

That is something I had no idea was possible.

Perhaps this is a factor in why some people just have a worse reaction than others who catch it at the same time but only have to fight off one version. A double whammy attacking the immune system.

Its one of the ways similar viruses exchange RNA / DNA (depending on virus type).

Interesting - so the Netherlands system was (in theory at least) much more rigorous than what's proposed here, which is simply to remove all restrictions?

Is that right?

SATURDAY ENGLAND HOSPITAL DEATHS

22 with 8 from the North West - was 20 with 7 the week before and 18 with 10 NW the week before that.

The other regions were:- East 2, London 0, Midlands 3, NE & Yorkshire 6, South East 2, South West 1

The 8 NW were :- Boton 1, East Lancashire (Blackburn etc) 2, Manchester 2, Pennine (Oldham/Rochdale) 1, Salford 2.

Age ranges:- 2 aged 40 - 59 11 aged 60 - 79 and 9 aged 80 Plus

2 of these date from six months or more ago so will likely not be counted.

20 with 10 from the North West - was 3 with 1 last week (biggest recent wk to wk jump)

10 of these from the Midlands and 10 North West. 0 everywhere else.

The 10 NW were 3 in Lancashire (Preston/Lancaster etc) and 7 in Liverpool,

Age ranges:- 2 aged 40 - 59, 6 aged 60 - 79 and 12 aged 80 Plus.
