Coronavirus (2021) thread

It's before everything. That's how time works.
Ugh. Tighter restrictions have been brought in as Omicron is currently known to be far more virulent than Delta and there is no long term data to its severity.

Therefore governments need to act whilst scientists do their thing. It’s not just the U.K. that has brought in tighter regulations.

We've had anecdotal evidence on here that some bloke who was floored with Delta on has a mild cold so far with Omicron. That’s not enough evidence to dictate all restrictions lifted.

Whether you deem the restrictions tight or not is subjective.

Wearing a mask in communal areas doesn’t seem too much of a hardship to me, but hey, I could be wrong.

Below I will post the position on this day a year ago 10 Dec 2020.

We were pre vaccine (the first dose had been given anywhere in the world just a couple of days earlier). And London was suddenly spiking in cases and a new variant (the Kent variant) had just been discovered and a huge wave was predicted (and kind of happened). And everyone was told the vaccines would hopefully save the day. Deja vu all over again now.

London had started climbing a week or so before and from about now last year the graph of those cases began to look very like the near vertical ones we are being shown for Omicron.

The mood was pessimistic with dire numbers forecast for January. We got some. It was not good but the worst fears never materialised thankfully. Deaths were bad but underneath some forecasts and the wave was relarively short lived.

In fact it peaked around 5 or 6 weeks after it started (19/20 January) and fell as steeply as it rose and by 27 February we were more or less where we were on 10 December heading down to very low levels for the next four months until Delta arrived and created a far less dramatic and well spread out wave suppressed by the vaccination programme. Even now we are nowhere near where we were at the start pont of the Kent variant wave a year ago.

On the data thread I plan to post a daily update charting the numbers day to day of Kent 20/21 versus Omicron 21/22 but thought I would post the first one in here so anyone interested can look as and when they feel like it on the data thread and see how this wave matches last years one in the very changed environment we have today.
Thanks @Healdplace

I always find your narrative posts interesting, balances and easily readable, like a very good Finance Director's Board report in fact !. Please keep going.

That’s part of the problem. The other part is covid fatigue and misinformation.
Indeed, as I said previously I’m triple jabbed , had COVID , wear a mask in shops and public transport, but I ain’t buying into being locked down again , if stupid fuckers don’t want the jab it’s down to them but don’t expect me to put my life on hold again , fuck em .

Has anyone actually mentioned any kind of lockdown?

Problem is nobody believes a single word anymore that Johnson and his gang say anymore
was just going to say this how anyone can believe a word is beyond me,if boris said the sun will rise in the morning i'd have to have a look out of the window to check, god we thought Thatcher was vile but this fellow takes the biscuit

Loud rumours of plan C apparently, it’s blindingly obvious that vaccines both work and are safe and I’ve zero sympathy anymore for the fuckwits who live in denial , if they want to die then fuck em .
Rumours about a plan C that hasn’t been defined.

Im kind of with you as regards the vaccine deniers, but I’m not getting into a tiz over possible future outcomes.

I will wait for what the science shows us and be governed by that, rather than by what press a politician needs to bury.

UKHSA latest on omicron.

Tirelessly generating and sharing absolutely bang up to the minute data and world class analysis for the pleasure of being called pricks by randoms online.

(Seriously - very informative if you want to be informed)

Interesting read. Pretty worrying that AZ has zero effectiveness against it, which I’m not sure how she has concluded?

Good that there have been no deaths though and if AZ has zero effectiveness, surely that means it must be much weaker?
