Coronavirus (2021) thread

I read somewhere that these numbers now include lateral flow tests, so not necessarily comparable on a positivity basis. Could be wrong, and still very good, heartening figures, and at the very best end of what anyone thought was possible Jan 4th when Johnson finally made the inevitable decision.
Yes someone mentioned that on here. Their disinterest in the positivity level in England baffles me.

But the very low level in England v other nations makes little sense. So I suspect that might be why.

Guess it is more likely to be around the levels of Scotland which do seem to take this number more seriously.

Either way testing is going up and numbers coming down and that trend is obviously going to mean positivity falling regardless of exact numbers.

It’s only natural that some districts/medical practices are better organised or quicker off the mark than others. We’re not a centralised authoritarian state. There may be other reasons at play too but expecting uniform rollout everywhere is a tall order.

Not having a pop, by the way. Just felt moved to respond.
In addition population demographics and quality of people's health are very different in different postcodes so it would be impossible for everywhere to vaccinate at the same pace. They are also using up spare vaccine at the end of a batch rather than letting it go to waste which means some random people getting it if they are nearby. All in all it has been a fantastic effort so far. Uniform roll-out is just impossible.

Scotland is definitely hugely lagging in vaccinations, regardless of the spin about care home residents. For the 75-79 age group 75% have received at least their first shot in England compared to 14% in Scotland. They only did just over 9k yesterday whereas Wales did over 12k and it has a smaller population by two million.

Staying at home ,proper isolation, not going out to work or socially becomes the norm after a while , i was agrophobic for a decade , it becomes harder to go out than to stay in , a football game was somewhat of a jump in the deep end and being in the pub first with the people and the noise near!y gave me a panic attack but man did it shake me out of my bubble ..into a pandemic , timing is everything lol

Seeing @BlueMoonRisin' should have given you a panic attack

Could it just be that there were some cases of the SA variant, but they were contained?
This news seemed to be cases which couldn't be linked, and thus would secondary infection from (probably) asymptomatic people?
There are lots of possibilities. Thats why enhanced local testing is to take place.

And/or lockdowns?
The Kent variant has resulted in all EU countries locking down and closing schools because of the rampant spread in the UK in the run up to Christmas. The only exception is Italy that opened up today.
Portugal is still in the crapper mind even though cases halved today due to severe lock down. 235 deaths is down a bit too but they have a weekend lag too and recent death numbers equate to over 2000 deaths in the UK rounding up per capita.

Did you actually read the thread before criticising?

Sorry, but it is frustrating having to waste time answering the same thing.
Yes I did read it , it came across to me as there was only a press conference as there was good news to give. Apologies if that’s not what you meant.
