Coronavirus (2021) thread

I am getting confused about the figures if I am being honest.

I read an article in the Telegraph today. That had a graph, with side by side comparisons, and yearly average UK mortality rates.

Sure there were mortality Spikes.

Confusingly though ,mortality spikes recently attributed to Covid over say the last year and a half, directly correlated with previous mortality spikes over the last few years that were attributed to seasonal Flu.

Let me make this clear, I AM NOT questioning that Covid is real. Of course Covid is real, The evidence is everywhere.

It is also beyond doubt that there have been many mortalities to Covid.

Why though do these Covid spikes correlate directly with Flu spikes from previous years.

This is what is confusing me.

In fact why is it so hard find any recent data on flu mortalities.

The only plausible explanation i can come up with. Is the lockdown virtually eradicated seasonal Flu. Yet if that was the case, then why did Covid deaths rise over the same period ?. both are contagious airborne diseases.

Not sure what is going on. Maybe the author was lying with the graphs.

Or maybe Covid numbers are deliberately being exaggerated.
I’m no expert but the fact that people are mixing far less will surely have an impact on flu numbers. And Covid is far more infectious than flu, moreso this new variant. You can catch it just by touching a surface in a supermarket while doing everything right which tells you all you need to know, whereas I’m guessing that it’s doubtful you could catch flu that way.
I would also add that plenty of people with Covid are asymptomatic so don’t even know they’ve got it which is dangerous as they won’t be isolating, meaning they can easily pass it on. However, if you had the flu you’d know about it and you probably wouldn’t go out of your house.

GM scoreboard highlights:

Not a bad day but other parts of the NW still doing slightly better than Greater Manchester.

Liverpool - for example - had its lowest score in nearly 3 weeks today at just 383. Week to week that is a fall over the past weeks from 792 to 696 to 383.

These steep falls on Merseyside and in East Lancashire (both of which had further to fall than GM) are the main reasons why pro rata GM is inching up.

Today cases in GM fell from 1579 to 1337 - versus last Thursday that is a good drop of 580 as it was then 1917.

However, the fall day to day in GM was 242 of the NW fall of 849. This was a small enough split of the overall drop in the region to inch the GM % of the NW up a bit from 29.9 to 30.2%.

That is no big deal and not significant as GM is still far below the 53% of the NW it was at in October when driving the pandemic here at that time.

But it is UP 1% on the split of the NW cases as it was 29.2% seven days ago when the NW total was 6560 - which is 2129 more than today.

Nowhere in GM had a bad day. Especially given we know well over 600, 000 tests were carried out in the UK.

Most fell but only modestly. Manchester and Wigan down by the most. Wigan all the way to 148 and Manchester to its lowest in a couple of weeks at 257.

Only Bolton rose (but just by 2)

Two boroughs - Oldham and Bury - were below 100 cases today.

Oldham continues to show remarkable improvement for the only borough in GM with a Pop Score over 8000 - so a minimum of 8% of the population having had Covid (though it will be way more than that as these are just the numbers who tested positive in the town).

Oldham is doing nothing to dent my suspicion that they may be the closest to herd immunity in GM and so are not finding cases as easily spread now than the places with more left who have not been infected.

After that hard hitting covid report from a hospital ward by Clive Myrie the other day, why the fuck are the BBC asking Boris when restrictions will be lifted and then having their leading headline of the day on the 6o’clock news “Boris Johnson won’t set a date for when restrictions will be lifted”?

Are they fucking stupid?

The media don’t half do my head in!

I'm in Oldham and throughout late October and November I heard daily of either a colleague or friend/acquaintance who had tested positive. It just seemed to go mad.
Since then, very few.

While both viruses can linger in the air, and covid does linger in the air longer than flu; neither influenza nor SARS-CoV-2 are airborne diseases. They are both spread from human-to-human-close-contact or surface-to-hand-to-face transmission.

However, Covid has a longer incubation period than flu and 1 in 3 people who contract covid show no symptoms at all. Therefore covid is spread more widely than flu because people don’t know they’ve got for either 4 days longer than flu symptoms show or people don’t know they’ve got it at all, so just carry on as normal spreading it around.

Because we have a vaccine, it is natural for people to become excited at the prospect of having a date in the calendar as to when we all come out of hybernatiin, but I think that is an unreal expectation as there are still too many unknowns at the moment to realistically call a return to normal date.

You seem a bit of a jinx like Worsley

Tim, Israel has tried to send vaccinations even though it isn’t their responsibility to do so. However they have been refused by the ruling authority who are now lying to gain international support. Lying is something that comes to them naturally.
It’s very difficult to know who is telling the truth. You have two despicable regimes at loggerheads. Israel could get the vaccines to the Palestinian medics if they really wanted to.
