A total of 7,245 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 15 January mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released today.

This is up from 6,057 deaths in the week to 8 January and is the highest weekly figure since the week ending 24 April.

More than a third (40.2%) of all deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to 15 January mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate - the highest proportion recorded since the pandemic began

Effects of the holidays ?
More likely the effects of staying in tiers or the wrong tiers too long in December rather than any mixing over Christmas.

Its not the rules as such but the promoting of the message it sends out.

I know This Morning well first hand and how it has changed since then. Richard and Judy would never have done a story like this in the same way. They were journalists not entertainers. And the way it has morphed from the Albert Dock days to now is very reflective of how UK society has changed in those 35 years or so. And why we have so many problems with people who think they can act above and beyond what is right as fame trumps everything in the age of tweet posting twits.

I'm afraid we're way too far down the rabbit hole now to climb back out. The stupid and vacuous lap it up, ensuring the slightly smarter and/,or well marketed stupid and vacuous become very rich in the process.

All true, but the point is if you turn a publicity seeker into a story by giving them publicity that inspires others to think it okay to manipulate the rules then as a responsible media source you are guilty of creating the story not just reporting it.

These things should be either exposed as something we need less of and wrong or ignored. Not given air time to become an aspiration to chancers everywhere.

Even journalists should take seriously the role they have in persuading society why rules matter in a deadly pandemic.

I entirely agree with your very valid points , but as I just said on another post we're too far down the rabbit hole to come back. The same applies to most of the so called journalist's.

From Major Tom as the inspiration in lockdown 1 to this says a lot about how we have drifted away from stoic togetherness toward shallow story telling.

Clap for carers would never get off the ground now as it did in April.
You are really blaming phil and holly for that girl ? They are there to talk about what is happening and present both sides , they dont give people like her an easy time if they think they are wrong , richard would do the same

It does. And I keep thinking Hitler missed a trick by not living until he was 150 as he would likely have walked into Britain as he did into Austria now as Twitter would be full of him being a 'saviour who is misunderstood'.

This is our first real test as a vacuous society and it is exposing things we all likely knew was happening but in the midst of a global trauma the worst since that war illustrates how the media now creates history rather than reports on it.

This is true everywhere. Even in China where vital time was lost in reporting what was happening out of fear of the consequences of being honest.

As a society unless we face up to why this is a major backward step from the war spirit that saved society in the past then when another big trauma even worse than Covid arrives - and it will - we may be too far down that rabbit hole you speak of to avoid going the way of the dinosaurs.

I did not say that I was blaming them for that girl. I am pointing out that if you give a fame seeker the fame they seek you inspire society to regard fame seeking as a way to live.

Richard would have torn her to shreds. So would This Morning 30 years ago. Likely without even inviting her on.

I know it is a light entertainment programme and was then. But I also knew the show from the inside and how they planned stories and why they took the tone they did.

This Morning has just gone with the times and it is society that has the problem not that show which I have great fondness for.

They tried to bring it back 2 or 3 weeks ago, but it failed miserably as far as I can see, but the time of year and weather was all wrong to get it to work, unlike in the spring when it was daylight and relatively warm.
It is partly that but the real truth society has got bored with the pandemic and thinks it is time for something new and more interesting.

In the 1940s by the time of the Battle of Britain it would have lead to - let's quit while we are ahead. Declare neutrality. Let Germany conquer the rest of the world if they leave us alone. Much like America chose to do until they were attacked.

If that is the mood that is being bred into our young generations today in many ways because of how the media decide what is news and then how they choose to present it when the moment arrives and the fate of the world is in peril I have my doubts we will have the ability to stick at it and do what it takes if there is any kind of easier way out.

Rather concerns me not for now or tomorrow but for the future of our society as and when we face something worse than Covid. Which inevitably we will.

Easy to say I won't be there to see it. I know I likely won't. But that is the problem with a moment of fame. It creates the illusion that only now matters. When tomorrow is lurking in the shadows waiting for you to relax your guard.
