Maps showing current prevalence and recent rate of increase of COVID.

An indictment of the decision to leave most of the country in tier 2/3 over Christmas.

If that’s what she said then she’s a stupid ****.

It could have mutated anywhere in the world and come to Britain, it’s not the British virus.
Most people here refer to the variant that was first identified in South Africa as the South African variant.
Rather than using a cumbersome series of letters and numbers most people colloquially refer to the variants by where they were first identified.

Wrexham and Flintshire - close to the Cheshire/Merseyside area where imo lower tiers made them skyrocket by importing cases from more locked down areas - are now the two most infected areas of Wales. Denbighshire which was one of the lowest now also in top half.

Wonder why? Doubtless the government will work it out by Summer.

England vaccinations yesterday - similar rate to Scotland - probably a little above Scotland. Much better than Wales.

140, 441

121, 129 were first doses

19, 312 were second doses

Current running tally for England:

I st doses 2, 080, 280

2 nd doses 393, 925

Total England vaccinations as of last night:- 2, 474, 205

Vaccine comparison update - a few European countries plus US as comparisons. Israel remains way ahead of anyone else.

Looks like the UK has significantly accelerated in the last week compared to continental Europe - I'm guessing the Oxford/AZ vaccine is what has enabled this. Europe now has Moderna approval and supplies I believe, which will only come here later. EMA indicating they will complete assessment of the Oxford/AZ vaccine Jan 29th.

I think UK figures will come daily from now on.

My Dad had his vaccination last weekend. My Mum just texted me, she has hers on Friday. She is 79 so these eligibility criteria are indeed being interpreted a little by the health authorities.

This will completely change their lives with almost immediate effect. They just have to wait for the immunity to kick in and then all things that have been on hold they can do, albeit with due care and attention.
I wasn’t aware the vaccination gave you immunity.
We are told it just means when you catch it you aren’t ill, but can still spread it.

As expected pretty awful England hospital deaths today.

747 - Highest daily number since the peak week in April during the first wave.

Moreover the NW catch up I warned would come yesterday after the very low numbers then (13) sees 97 of those today from the region.

Even more damning indictment that the pond life on Merseyside were still allowed to attend football matches not 2 weeks ago.

Couldn't agree more, it was absolutely insane. As an aside, even without the obvious disaster unfolding, rules which allow 2-4,000(!) people to gather in a football stadium, but only six in a park are bonkers.

Seen lots of walkers out today, in big groups of 5/6, all in their 60’s mostly.

Trying to walk past them and they’re walking right across the footpath in there groups, making no effort to open up space.

They should know better at that age, it’s not me that’s at high risk.

England hospital deaths 3 wks v 2 wks v last wk v TODAY:-

TOTAL / NW TOTAL / NW % of ENGLAND TOTAL

405 / 64 NW / 16%

365 / 40 NW / 11% (Christmas/New Year week so reports lower)

582 / 109 NW / 19%

747 / 97 NW / 13% TODAY

As you can see not a terrible number for NW out of a huge one.

But be warned last Tuesday's 582 rose up to weekend after that day from 582 - 674 to 661 to 717 last Friday,

So it may be that the next couple of days are very bad numbers indeed.

Let us hope not.

Having looked into it I am sure that she said British strain/variant or mutation and not virus. Having watched a German language news clip on YouTube in which the presenter used "mutation" (same word in both languages), and read articles from more reputable news outlets than the Sun and Express.

Calling it that is fair enough when there is a need to differentiate and you don't have a technical audience familiar with CV96576 or whatever it's scientific name is. It's not for a cynical political in the same sense as "Chinese Virus" was.

More on the 747 England hospital deaths today:

REGIONS:-

149 London, 123 East, 118 Midlands, 110 South East, 108 NE & Yorkshire, 97 North West, 42 South West.

Too many huge hospital numbers to mention spread around the country now.

In the NW 31 in East Lancs was the highest. Pennine was the highest in GM with 20.

There must still be restrictions on vaccinated people as it is not known whether they can still transmit the disease or not.
In fact as far as I am aware vaccinated people still have to comply with government regulations the same as everyone else.

If they’re like my 89 year old father in law, after vaccination they will do things that everyone takes for granted but they have been afraid to do. Form a childcare bubble and see grandchildren, go to the shop, get some exercise.
