Do what Norway does perhaps.

Crisis there today as cases reach all of 10% of our level.

Response:

Shopping centres and other non-essential stores will be closed from noon local time on Saturday, organised sports activities will be halted and schools must rely more on remote learning, the health ministry said in a statement

We've been way too late all through this.
One of the better however more aggressive responses is to establish green and red zones as they did in Australia. The movement of people around the country is a prime reason why spread is so effective.

We live on an island so it should be very easy. Close the borders, establish internal borders (aka zones with enforced tiers) and then track and trace within the red zones, surveillance via random testing in the green zones.

We have tiering already but it's completely pointless when the tiers are not separated by physical borders. In November I could travel from Tier 2 to Tier 4 with no rules whatsoever to prevent this and that defeats the object.

Australia reported 5 cases yesterday.

saw that awful.

coppers teachers and supermarket workers should be treated as key workers and jabbed
i would also add binmen who have been doing a great job around here keeping our bins emptied even when short staff due to covid. If bins werent emptied you would trouble with the smell and rats etc

I still thinks it's a total scandal that in the middle of a pandemic with all the knowledge they had the government introduced the subsidiary meal scheme , effectively flooding bars and restaurants with future ICU cases and unfortunately future deaths . There should be a criminal investigation when all the dust settles, gambling with the nations lives and nobody seems to have called them out on it .
We were told that pubs and restaurants were safe to go back to in July, as long as we complied with track-and-trace washed our hands, sat down, and kept our 2m distance. That suited me as someone who loves pubs, and until table service meant that I sat where I was told I'd always plonk myself as far away as possible.

(Reported) cases stayed low through July into August and then exploded in September when schools and Universities went back, though I'll accept that Eat-Out-To-Help-Out will have played some part.

But I might have felt rather different about visiting pubs daily if I'd seen this report about transmission back in July;

Right from the start i have said to everyone thank you for working, chemist, the staff in casualty and on the wards, amazon and shopping deliveries, the bank, on the odd trip to tesco, they are all taken aback that they are thanked but to me they all deserve it

what about the property developers?

well that was the original plan wasn’t it vaccinate our way to freedom. Get the most vulnerable protected and then back to normal ish

however based on recent press conferences and statements my fear is they have no intention of releasing any of the restrictions any time soon.
Exactly
The acceptable risk is apparently no longer acceptable.
They’ve got opposition in parliament.
I can’t see civil unrest occurring this summer if they try and do what it looks like they are going to do.
There’s no way the younger half of the population will accept being locked up for another summer

I see Heathrow is copping some stick on Twitter this morning.
If ever you were going to make sure you had every member of staff on duty and were getting people through customs as quickly as possible, surely you'd do it when you knew a plane load of journalists who'd been in Washington covering the US election was landing!

Have a great day everyone!! Chilling this morning, bike ride this pm and a curry and the mighty blues later!!

A RONA FREE DAY!!!
Looking forward to today's game. Will avoid all the news channels today as it is too depressing even if Worsley thinks Boris and his bunch of morons are on top of this

So once the top 9 priority groups are vaccinated that prevents 99% of deaths

what % of ICU and Hospital admissions does it prevent

Reality and carping are not synonymous.

There is no reason whatever why we couldn't have reacted earlier at every stage, and if we had, tens of thousands now dead would be alive.
You don’t know that, you are surmising. It’s a pandemic, how many pandemics have you been through? At a time when we should ALL
be trying to act as one unit as much as possible, I for one, can’t see any value in carping.

Anyone know of any means to request an antibody test?

I’ve started on lateral flow testing with work now but I’m intrigued having never actually been out of school since this whole show started.

In the Oxford/Astra Zeneca trials no-one who received the vaccine but who then went on to contract Covid was hospitalised or died so you would expect numbers in hospital to reduce rapidly.
