A total of 7,245 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 15 January mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released today.

This is up from 6,057 deaths in the week to 8 January and is the highest weekly figure since the week ending 24 April.

More than a third (40.2%) of all deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to 15 January mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate - the highest proportion recorded since the pandemic began

Effects of the holidays ?
Nope. The R number being between 1.2 and 1.4 was the cause till lock down. Incidently the R value dropped a bit when schools closed for Christmas - though this was countered by the small effect of Christmas bubbles. The effect was a a straight line for the 7 day average through Christmas and New Year with reporting lag causing a fall over Christmas and the new year followed by a rise 3 days later.

well it was nonsense to begin with.
I refused to do it, as I'd seen enough of the hypocrites on my street who were doing it, yet were frequently violating the rules of the time, so they were out applauding the very people who they were threatening to put in jeapordy. In fact a couple who I'd seen breaking the rules, who were out applauding, were in fact health workers themselves.

England hospital deaths up too

875 - with 109 from NW - much on a par with last week - when it was 842 with 103 NW.

More evidence we are at a plateau here.

This is a modest week to week rise in what is one of the two biggest numbers of the week due to weekend catch up.

And NW still not showing any rise in death numbers percentage wise despite being high in case numbers

Starting to wonder if the current outbreak is more virulent and less deadly and if the fact that the NW seems to have focused on all care home residents being vaccinated has begun suppressing the numbers of deaths here. Though the real impact would not be seen just yet.

Something is working because deaths have stayed consistently at around 10 - 12% of England total even as the % of the cases in the NW escalated when the southern regions fell markedly.

May yet be a rise to come. But so far this looks positive news.

I know its The Mail, but, apparently Cats and Dogs passing it on to humans is a significant long term risk and they eventually need to be vaccinated.

well it was nonsense to begin with.

I don't think it will return as back then people's attitudes were different. The weather was incredibly good for that time of the year, lots of people thought it would be a few months of digging in and everybody was grateful for people still working and in particular the NHS.

Now we're almost a year in, lots of people have lost jobs and businesses and the government are offering no real hope of when the endless misery will end. Just as it looks like there is a glimmer of optimism, along comes something else to dampen that optimism. Also people are starting, rightly or wrongly, to be a little resentful of the NHS, as in the lockdowns are happening to stop them being overwhelmed. So I think the weekly clap is well and truly a thing of the past.

Considering this argument between the UK and EU regarding the vaccines, if it wasnt for Brexit would we be in the same spot in the queue as the rest of Europe?

Not looking to start brexit arguments just dont have a clue about this kind of thing

Perhaps we're declaring war on the EU over vaccines from Friday ?

judging by the scenes in the Netherlands they look like they have enough to deal with , with all fighting within .

boris usually does good news ones and leaves the shit to Hancock.

could be to announce the 10 day extension to your holiday at the wythenshawe Britannia on your return from holidays !!!
