Interesting that the majority are under 5. Knowing lots of people who had their first child in the last decade or so, I am fully aware that many times they rushed to hospital if the kids had anything more than a runny nose.
To be fair, infants in particular need to be watched. My mum's sister died at 6 months because the doctor thought she had a simple cold. She was dead by morning the next day.
However yes, most cases won't be as tragic as that.

That’s awful, what was the cause of death?

I should imagine many in the NHS working tirelessly trying to save lives in ICU will be wanting the same
I’m guessing those who lost their businesses or nearly did and those who lost loved ones due to important appointments missed and those who are currently suffering with their mental well-being are praying there isn’t one.

agreed. but without hospital beds and the collapse of the NHS then we truly are screwed.

Not too sure, my daughter in previous spikes has wanted lockdowns this time though her and her boyfriend saying they and most of their colleagues don’t . They want to do their job but be able to finish work and have a life/ social life when they are off ,for their own mental well being.
My daughter suffered going home to an empty flat and not seeing her family and friends after some very hard days in the hospital during the first lockdowns. This time she thinks they can cope without any lockdown. If we all just be sensible wear masks and get boosted.

Imo the only reason for a lockdown should be if the NHS is struggling with capacity, that is literally the only reason and shouldn’t be done in areas where hospitals are coping. It’s shit for the staff and they need all the help they can get but whilst lockdowns are sometimes needed, they cause different damages to society and people that are just as much a “pandemic”.

Something to live by.

Pneumonia. She died in her sleep. She had been visibly suffering from a cold for a few days before and her mum (my Gran) got some meds from the GP the day she died. Just saying that, in our family experience, infants can go very quickly if signs are missed.
Gran never really got over it. Even in the throes of dementia some 50 years later she would wake up (like she did the day she found her baby in the cot beside her) and wail "the baby's dead, the baby's dead..."
Even now it breaks my heart to remember that.

agreed but i fear we're heading that way, think I just heard hospitalisation has increased 10% in a week. I do not want a lockdown ever, but for the sake of the NHS I will always abide if they are pushing full capacity.

So sorry to hear that, life is incredibly cruel. It’s every parents worst nightmare. I’d rather be burned at the stake than lose one of mine before I go myself.

Looks like it might have already burned out in SA, in which case extending its life might be exactly the wrong thing to do. We’ve got a real world evidence base that we seem reluctant to use, which seems quite unscientific.
Gauteng hospitals seeing very few extra cases and still functioning as normal, for example.
Agree, but the life expectancy is SA is 64.3 years and in the UK it is 81.2. The age group that are most vulnerable in the UK are not there in sufficient numbers in SA.
