Coronavirus (2022) thread

Had two.colds in the last month but neither COVID, still not had it as far as I know.

My employer sent round a notification earlier this week advising that covid is now classed the same as the common cold and we'd be expected to treat the same with regards working as it's now downgraded in threat severity to 'normal' - i.e. don't come in the office if you're ill, but if you do get it you're expected to carry on working from home. Have a lemsip and suck it up, buttercup.

Still, quite a way we've come.

Call me old fashioned. But to me if you're ill you take the required number of days off work to get better again.

Working from home is still working.

Had 5th jab yesterday sore arm but ok they give you maderna for this booster as it covers both variants
As does the Pfizer now. They’re called bivalent vaccines as they protect against the original covid and the Omicron variant and either will be available (but not both) if and when people go for their autumn booster.

Depends how ill you feel I guess. With a bit of a sniffle I’m perfectly capable and happy to get work done from home. Obviously if I’m shivering with a fever and clinging onto a Lempsip for dear life it’s out of office on and a day of naps and Netflix.

This is how I see it. have a cold, even if I can work, work from home to not spread it to colleagues.

Yes it has. Just another virus.

While its not killing people at large numbers now, to class it as "just another virus" is a mistake. its still one of the fastest spreading viruses known to man and therefore infects lots of people at the same time, resulting in lots of people off sick from work at the same time, from a business/NHS point of view its really quite a big deal because of those out sick

Thats not including long covid, and there is mounting evidence that you have more chance of long covid the more times you have the virus. one paper suggesting you are highly likely to get Long covid ( if I recall correctly, meaning at least 12 weeks of debilitating symptoms) within 5 covid infections.

Some people are mentally stronger than others.

For some, reading about a virus that kills a fraction of us is too much to take, whilst the adults can discuss how it affects society. They might even be doing so without hiding away from the world.

To back this up: https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/c...eater-risk-heart-attacks-year-after-infection

The worry with the above piece is that even if you have a really mild case of Covid that is by no means the end of it and these post-Covid heart issues can manifest themselves in those people too

I also came across another article a while back that stated you were twice as likely to die within 6 months of getting Covid a second time as those who had only been infected once. I've now had it 3 times so God knows where I stand! The way it's going though, who knows how many times we'll catch it over, say, the next 5 years? And it's clear that each additional infection adds to the the health risk.

I do think eventually it will be classed as "just another virus" and over time the immune system in our bodies will learn to fight it better but that could be years and years away as it's still very much in the infancy.

Weekly update on England hospital numbers:

Patients up from 7024 last Thursday to 9631 today - up about 36% in the week V 5142 to 7024 last week - a rise of about 38%.

Those on ventilators up from 160 last Thursday to 195 today - just over 20% rise V 145 to 160 last week - a weekly rise of 10%.

For the first time in several months every England region has over 1000 patients. On September 19 none did. Midlands has the most on 1910. North West on 1298 - fourth most of the 7 regions.

Monday - latest numbers available - there were 1344 admissions V 998 the previous Monday & 781 the previous Monday.

These will put into context the TV news reports that are only reporting the big jump in Monday admissions. Mondays are always the biggest day of the week for obvious reasons of the weekend hold over.

Do not worry there will only be weekly reports so I am not going to start posting lots of numbers every day again
.
Just putting things in context now the media are reporting Covid numbers again.
