Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

This actually makes things worse for me from a purely political standpoint.

If a private company can be found to do tests for the PL then what the fuck were the Govt doing in not co-opting them into helping them test the rest of the country for the virus from the off.

The PL is not a special case, especially when there are more dead than can fit in a lot of PL stadiums.

Think about that, the amount who have died would fill Stamford Bridge and the PL big wigs think restarting the PL is the right thing to do.
Nail on head there bud. Totally agree, particularly re the testing.

Don't do anything then, ever. No the Premier League is not a special case so do not make it so.

It's 'safe' to play sport outdoors. The measured sample of people who tested positive for the virus in the week 24 May to the 30 May was 0.11%. That's 1 in 1000 and this is profoundly an illness that badly affects the old and the immune-compromised. Even if hitherto healthy young adults were equally affected there are very few footballers who have tested positive for the virus.

Instead of having a blanket lockdown, and pretending that this virus affects everyone equally, we should recognise what has been obvious for months: this virus overwhelms a number of elderly, particularly if they have other conditions that leave them immune-compromised. Focus on protecting the weak and the vulnerable in society. That is what a welfare system is supposed to be for.

Well said.

I agree about who this virus effects but the elderly and the vulnerable to this virus seems they’ll have to stay in lockdown till A vaccine because the odds of dying if they get it is worse than a toss of a coin.

The only reason lockdown is being eased is the hospitals are not under the stress they were earlier, the reason why that is is because the elderly and the vulnerable to this virus have been in lockdown, like you say the effect of this virus on the majority of the country is minima and if they get it it’s terrible but they recover some don’t even know they will have it.

If you don't recognise who the vulnerable are, how can you protect them? We should start by first of all recognising what Covid-19 is, how it transmits, and who it affects. Once you do that then what you do about it follows.

Isolated individuals screaming about millionaire footballers who are just about the last people threatened by Covid-19 shows the pitiful nature of human society. We may have split, and imaged the atom but in terms of social criticism, humanity is at a low point. Just about any criticism of authority that is ever made now comes from orthodoxy. "You're not Conservative enough, Mr Johnson, the lockdown is not tight enough!"

The PL restarting is a fucking joke, they should just hand Liverpool the title and be done with this season.

I have serious concerns about the restart.

1/ If no fans are allowed into watch games and the TV companies get great viewing figures, they will offer more money, that makes fans irrelevant to clubs, they can exist without fans and all the expense used to cater for fans can be saved and turned into profit. As a majority of PL watchers never go to games they will not be affected by no fans being there. For the likes of me, who has been going since 1968 going to the game is more than ythe actual game itself, its the social occasion where I meet friends and have a day out, the game is the reason for it and always has been. If we cant go games then why bother going into town.

2/ I am sure fans will be there, corporate can social distance. That's fair on the average fan....not.

3/ The media who are all so happy about the restart they have been blowing trumpets about it will be there in person, the average fans will not. I challenged Delaney on this and he ignored me.

4/ What guarantee is there the season will finish anyway, a club in danger of going down can easily fabricate a covid outbreak and get fixtures postponed,

5/ How the fuck is neutral venues in any shape of form fair.

6/ 6 subs, get fucked you cant change competition rules half way through a competition

7/ What about players who are concerned about playing, how can you stop them for doing what they think is the right thing. are we going to see lawsuits?

8/ How the fuck are they going to stop fans gathering at venues when they cant stop fans going the beach. Or will it be a case of one rule for normal people and as per fucking usual one for football fans

9/ The timings of the games on TV if they are a success will become the new normal, goodbye the last few remaining Saturday 3pm KOs and welcome to 10am KO on Tuesday for the Malaysian market

10/ There is a fucking pandemic that is killing people if you haven't noticed, footballers aren't fucking immune

11/ Will footballers all have to test and trace, what if one player is found positive, the knock on effects of that are enormous considering the amount of games played in a short period

12/ Johnson is a **** and he thinks if he throws the working class a bone in allowing the PL to resume, no fucker will notice 40,000 have fucking died

13/ Why haven't the lower leagues started

14. Why has the women's league been ended sensibly

15/ How come PL clubs can get covid tests when front line medical staff cant.

16/ If the games are played rather postponed until its safe to play, local business loses thousands of pounds.

17/ If its only safe to gather in groups of 6 are they playing 3 a side and without a ref.

18/ This is fucking crazy and the R in the NW remains around 1, that means Manchester is still in danger of a second wave.

19/ Pumped in crowd noise and cardboard cut out fans.....just fuck off

20/ There is no point in football without fans , whether that be one man and his dog watching Cheadle Town or 100,000 at Wembley for a Cup Final and to play these games is nothing short of a fucking disgrace and a snub to all the fans of every club who regularly attend games home and away.

They can stick there Televised football up their arses, I will not be watching and if any of you have any sense you wont either, if the game goes on without fans then it can continue without fans and we become irrelevant because Roger the Rag from Roehampton is deemed more important than us because he has a full sky sports package.

Pretty much covers it.

The safety/health issues are one thing - personally, I think it‘s fucking idiocy to be rushing back to finish this season, but can readily accept that others see things differently on that score, in terms of managing risk, at least.

But it‘s the longer term implications that are more troubling, in terms of the game being wrested still further from match-going fans. There‘s an obvious danger that measures introduced as ‚temporary‘ or ‚exceptional‘ - and which show even the faint promise of financial gain for vested interests - become the new norm.

The only thing you missed off your list is the prospect of some **** floating the idea of a ‘39th game‘ or staging matches in the US or Asia again - which is pretty much inevitable, once we go down the route of saying the presence of ‚home‘ fans and home advantage are irrelevant.

Playing sport is fine they mainly are young fit but it’s the indirect effect of sport that will increase the virus I have no doubt.

Football as we know it is unlikely to return , looking at other viruses like SARS etc., a vaccine is improbable , supporters no doubt will eventually be allowed into stadiums , but with social distancing being the norm , quarter full stadiums will not create an atmosphere we have been used to. Players fees , salaries will take a big hit which i dont think is a bad thing , it was getting ridiculous. But the major concerns are the clubs further down the football ladder , just cannot see how they are going to continue without much needed gate money

Long term this is a great result for Sky,BT etc., they will make more profits than ever with fans forced to pay for their subscriptions to continue to support their clubs, i will not be one of the subscribers , the commentary /punditry is riddled with agenda's and football without supporters / packed terraces / seats is not something i want to watch. Will follow City as i have for over 50 years , but celebrating a KDB worldy or shouting "Dzeko (insert any player) you wanker" in frustration at a plastic screen just doesnt do it for me.

So its Radio Manchester , its the future , probably the only pro-City media out there , the rest mostly have their knives out for our club , so will be ignored but obviously Bluemoon will be a haven of impartiality

Good luck to anyone who needs their football fix , but in reality you will be no better than the plastic Rag in Singapore or Dipper in Mumbai with his satellite dish. Hate this f*cking virus.

That's a great point and makes you wonder if that is one of the real reasons why they are bringing it back so early. If fans accept empty stadiums and them not being able to attend it removes a barrier to the 39th game and maybe the 40th and so being played worldwide.

Who the fucks knows where that may end up, maybe the PL roadshow with all the teams travelling the world to play in different countries because their loyal homebased fans will quite happily stump up for a SKY package and we the real fans get the odd home game a year as a thank you for our loyalty to the brand. The FA Cup final live from Kuala Lumpar, the Semis staged in Kathmandu and Seoul.

City v United at the LA bowl
Liverpool v Everton at the Ulan Bator national stadium.

This may feel a little far fetched to some, but if you are an owner who wants a return on an investment why the fuck wouldnt you send your team to play these games and count the cash rolling in.
