Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

Nothing political about it. We have a right wing government here as well, but the difference was they listened to the science and acted early and decisively.
We’ve had 102 deaths in a nation of 25 million.
Ah yes, you're a colonial. Well, I could argue that the virus has good taste and has therefore left you lot alone, or that you are far less densely populated than the UK so are at an advantage, but in the end cannot argue that our response to the pandemic has been shambolic.

I don't believe there was one in the last round and none this time

BREAKING: From the sixth round of coronavirus testing in the #PremierLeague - ZERO positives after 1,195 tests on players and club staff on Thursday and Friday.

Why not believe it Karen? Me, I always believe what the authorities tell me. Life is simpler that way. So yes, it's ok to play behind closed doors for armchair fans and again, yes, we are guilty of cheating at football as those upstanding folk at UEFA tell us we are. There now, not so bad is it really when you say it quickly when you're pissed?

Democracies function on citizens making sensible decisions. Give people the benefit of the doubt, youngsters know to stay away from the old and the infirm. Nanny state doesn’t work. Lockdown served its purpose, now trust the population to behave sensibly

No, democracies function despite citizens who are prone to irrational decisions, it is the one concept that confounds economists. You simply cannot calculate for irrationality. Your use of the words "nanny state" marks out your political persuasion, it is obviously libertarian and whilst many see good in libertarianism, in a pandemic it is close to insanity as basically what you are saying is that people should be free to bring death to others. You do not have the freedom to burn somebodies house down with them it, so why should you have the freedom to help spread a virus that may bring death to them. Any functioning states first responsibility is the protection of its citizens and you may think that you can trust people to behave sensibly but that is palpable nonsense, people are by nature irrational, it is a human trait and that is why countries have rules based societies and laws in place so that a society can function.

Yesterday saw mass demonstrations across the nation, whether you agree with the or not is not the issue, but it shows that people will act irrationally and therefore trusting them to behave sensibly is not going to happen. When Liverpool win the league will their fans act sensibly? I am certain they will not and I am certain they will flood the streets of Liverpool and try their utmost to be at or in the ground when they finally win the title, because it is their passion and passion breeds irrationality.

Sorry mate but trust is what got us into this mess. It's fairly plain to see that a significant portion of this country cannot be trusted to do the right thing and it ain't just the younger element. I trust in the phrase, "Give them an inch and they'll take a mile" Rules are being broken left right and centre. Why will it get better if there are fewer. It's like letting go of a leash when there's a rabid dog on the other end of it.

Totally man I share your concern but I honestly think the dafties make up a small enough proportion to enable us to expect a positive outcome
You don't need many rotten apples to ruin the barrel. In one respect the fucking idiots (i'm sorry but the tame 'dafties' really is understating things for me) will be a litmus test as to where we really are and thy will be guinea pigs for the scientists trying to understand the mechanics of this virus. From a selfish point of view perhaps i should stay isolated and watch what happens from the sidelines. These protests and the beauty spot crowding will either bring a second wave or create herd immunity . Only last week scientists were saying that there were not enough cases in circulation for a vaccine to be properly tested? Perhaps the government are easing off for scientific as well as financial reasons?
I fully understand the need to ease the lockdown, alot of people are struggling being cooped up for so long, but for financial reasons we need to get the country working again, but easing lockdown will only work for us if we take baby steps and EVERYONE, plays by the rules. To paraphrase a medical term , we really have kicked the arse out of the pants in the first week of easing the lockdown. This has been exacerbated by the recent protests despite pleas from government, medical officials and police. These people are too thick, they don't give a shit or virtue signalling means more . The ones that do, unfortunately will be the ones most likely to die. Not much else to say, i'll just watch for the spike in death rates, the early signs are there. As it stands if things continue as they are , why criticise Liverpool fans for celebrating or gathering outside grounds . Be interesting to see if the police stand back or if there's a rally for Brexit supporters ?

The virus kills between 1 and 3 per 1000 they reckon, mainly the older fuckers like me , i'm creeping into the higher risk categories but perhaps we should just get on with it? accept there will be death of 100 -200k and carry on as normal . It's only the old and sick, they probably voted for Brexit so perhaps a new referendum? Those that survive will have immunity? I can see the benefits We'd be free to travel, work, play but would Aussies? Your hopes lie in a vaccine or the disease withering on the vine

Round our way I would say the majority of people who ignored lockdown were the over 70s. I had to take my mam to hospital every Tuesday and Friday and we had to drive through the town center. Without fail they would be all out. You could not have got a seat on any of the benches if you had wanted one. Yes there were a few teenagers breaking lockdown but majority older

Same in my town.

I had quite a few pages to read through to catch up so I may have missed it BUT

we have been given a raft of fixtures that have a date and a TV channel who will be showing it, what I cannot see is where the games are going to be played. Are we still being forced into neutral venues and if so which matches and where are the venues ?

Surely they have decided by now.
