Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

What does anyone expect from the clowns that "supposedly" run football in this country.

The sensible option would be to cancel the season, null and void, no champions, no relegation, no promotion. Treat this like they did when WWII happened.

Also the funniest option.

But yeah, there's too much money in it to do that. If they cancel it, they lose all of the TV money for the remaining games. If it's behind closed doors, it's still on TV.

SKY & BT will be running their hands. They’ll hike up their prices and they’ll be PPV games. Profiteering at its most evident.
They’ll never end the season early. It’s too costly. Some clubs will struggle to survive financially. It could cripple a couple and certainly ruin a few.
So they cancel out Gunners game, yet go ahead with Diapers CL game. Importing thousands of possibly infected fans to our island. On a plus side. They got beat.

I think you're failing to give Liverpool credit for the community-minded decision to lose the game. They knew it was a risk to the public for English teams to continue to play in the Champions League and risk foreign fans coming over, and like the bastions of selflessness they are, decided to sacrifice their defence of the trophy. They're the real heroes of this outbreak.

There is another (dodgy) option ......
Carry on as usual and let fans decide if they want to attend games
Pay at the gate as per the good old days!

This behind closes doors option is only going to work until players start getting infected. Then it goes tits up as the squad then has to self isolate for 14 days. Chaos ensues.

The players could contact their union, as is their right and say, fuck this. I believe one team has already refused to fly into Italy in the Europa league, closed doors or not. They could also argue, again rightly, that without fans then home advantage is lost and their opponents had such when they played them away. It is a minefield and I hope they make a stand.

And local councils throughout Europe won't have the expense of dredging city centre fountains for missing pensioners.
