Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I think this is a common misconception about essential work only being allowed. If you can do your job while observing social distancing advice at all times then it’s permitted. If not, then you can’t work, and football clearly doesn’t fall into the category where social distancing is possible, so any talk of it starting up again is a fucking joke!

Wrong it’s only essential work.

That’s not how I’ve read it all along. If social distancing can’t be observed, then yes it’s only essential work. If it can be observed, then you can work even if it’s not classed as essential. That’s why my local chippy is open again - strict guidelines saying only 2 people allowed in at any one time. In fact, when I went last week they were only allowing one in. Place your order, pay for it by contactless, stand outside, and they knock on the window when it’s ready.

Well I’ll stand corrected then all I’ve heard read is only essential work if the government have changed there stance and say now that football is essential! Training like arsenal are doing 5 per pitch and not allowed in any buildings is probably fair enough but around 300 at one game with 22 players plus referees is another thing.

Oh, I totally agree that football isn’t essential and as they can’t socially distance even at a behind closed doors game then it shouldn’t be allowed until social distancing restrictions are lifted and that could be 12 months or more away!

I watched a little clip on the B(ullshit)BC website this morning that looked at how La Liga and Serie A are coping, and Serie A may well be facing empty stadia until March 2021 after Italian Government documents were leaked and showed there are no plans for mass sporting events to allow fans back until then.

Can we not bash the BBC please we will probably miss it when its replaced by Fox despite the fact its been very Bias (probably not in the way you think) But its not driving the return of football thats Sky BT and the Government who want the tax money and feel good factor.

I despite reservations I think football will have to return fairly soon but of course behind closed doors perhaps for a very long time.

Listening to talksport Simon Jordan cannot stand him think he is wrong all the time he was talking about lower down clubs needing government loans with conditions attached on wages debt community outreach youth development etc. I think the idea is perhaps not terrible but politically not going to happen more likely more more games further up the table on TV with some of the money paid to lower league clubs

Simon Jordan was worried about the spitting sweeting and contact element of sport He spun some of the figures tho completely ignored the fact players are lot fitter younger healthier than normal people. Also seemed to be implying that because Germany had a lot of people with the disease and lot of people in hospital it was suddenly going to have it really bad despite the fact they have dealt with it better than most have an amazing health system more testing which alters their figures and they have of course had a lockdown like us in fact more severe and went earlier on it which has flatted their curve just like we have started to do so

Also he did not understand the proposal to bring back football seemed to think it would be brought back behind closed door on free TV to stop us going to the pubs but that it would not stop us going to the pub. Its actually suggested that it will be brought back behind closed doors on Free TV to stop people who do not have sky going round to the houses of people who do. The pubs wont be open at the beginning anyway. He did ask how BBC ITV etc would pay for it which I guess is valid but they do pay for some sport and the BBC is ultimately funded by the government who have more money than Sky etc besides what would the existing rights holders and clubs do if the government made them give games away for free the government could just say fine no games full stop behind closed doors or otherwise

I was on a call last night with the guy that owns my local gym. It is a small, independent group PT gym. He stated that the current situation with fitness centres/gyms is that they (through UK Active) are lobbying the government for a June 1st reopening. He said that for any hope of this being even remotely feasible, they are pushing the idea that a gym will contain no more than 1 person per 100 square feet at any one time and strict social distancing will be maintained, including the closing of communal showers, cafe areas etc. He says this will be a lot easier for him than it will be for large commercial gyms that have large customer bases and contain big weight machines and small fitness class rooms etc etc.

Gyms impact a huge percentage of the population and are having to change everything, just to give themselves even the remotest chance of opening again 5 weeks from now. The gym companies are losing huge amounts of money, a lot of the staff are likely losing 20% of their wage on the Furlough scheme and the general population of gym members (millons) are getting fat at home. Yet football, a contact sport, thinks it deserves special privileges and should be able to start again yesterday, so they can get the season finished (in a manner completely different from what has gone before) just so the pockets of greedy fat cats aren't negatively impacted, all while thousands around the world are ill and dying.

Its pretty disgusting really, even by the football authorities extremely low standards.

And why Find it infuriating when P Morgan on breakfast keeps banging the drum about we must test people why doesn’t he do some research into the testing outcomes and how it is tested?! The tests they are doing now with a swab back of the nose for one if you don’t got far back enough in your nose you have to go that far back it feels like it’s touching inside you head also if there isn’t enough mucus on it the test will not be accurate enough.
You are quite correct sir. I suspect the reason swabs are performing poorly is that they are not always performed correctly. Unpleasant to say the least.

Based on Boris speaking then, it sounds like they are not looking to 'ease restrictions' anytime soon.

Personally, not sure how pushing forward with football restarting lines up with that....

I think the lockdown will start to get eased a week on Thursday. Probably common sense not to say that though with a week and a half to go through fear of people starting to go out even more if they know it will soon be over. Don’t agree with behind closed doors but it looks completely inevitable now.
