Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

People are putting two and two together to get 5. Journalists and ex footballers putting a slant on getting football back are speaking through their wallets. Football stopping stops their income stream. Very little, if any of it is to do with an agenda of getting Liverpool the title.

It's only understandable people are anxious to make money again.

Ultimately this will come down to whether the players are strong enough to say no if they don't feel safe. They will be put under severe pressure by the media.

It shouldn't have come to this, it should have been annulled weeks ago
If broadcasters and sponsors can get out of paying £100sm they may well pull the plug on football clubs. The effect could be disastrous.

It's one thing in the midst of a crisis the government supporting business and workers but that wont last.

One theory I’ve heard from a friend who is the father in law of a premier league player is that all remaining games will be played at St George’s Park and teams will be in lockdown at hotels nearby for 6 weeks. Several games each day.

that was shot down days ago

The restart date they have in mind is the 8th June. Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga preparations underway so why should the Premier League not be looking at this?

I don't know why some fans have some entrenched views as to whether it's safe to play and train. You are not being asked to do anything.

Footballers are isolating anyway. They would just be expected to do so as a group for the duration of their league season. I think that's really difficult to achieve but he situation is changing every week.

I've been ignoring this topic so I don't know if the sponsorship and broadcasting losses have been worked out yet. Is it a real issue or not? If the broadcasting and commercial deals are at risk, then that means many football clubs are also at risk.

Suspect and hope CL goes ahead but PL looks very awkward. For City fans, the PL holds no excitement at all but I don't get the strong feelings that some are expressing. Many of you will be going back to work by the 8th June in some shape or form. Footballers are no different in that respect. They wont be getting crammed on tubes and trains. They'll be traveling in Range Rovers and be training out in the open in the Summer weather. Maybe it isn't safe but I don't see why you wouldn't explore it and look at it.

I'd be disappointed if they don't restart the Champions League and I am sure the players will be too. That's definitely possible.

Assuming it is safe and everything. Why would you want to watch it? Football without fans in the stadium will be awful and I'm sure the players will find that out soon enough.

You make fair points there.

For me the issue is that I am not sure its actually appropriate or if it will be at that time. I don't think it will. Football should only return when it is safe for fans to attend in the way they did a few weeks ago.

Just supposing they play the CL and City win it behind closed doors, it wont exactly be thrilling will it. I think it is totally pointless without supporters being there.

Other than Liverpool fans who would honestly watch these games in any number, anyone who pays to do so need their fucking head feeling. If its free I wont bother watching and am sure many will be the same.

At the end of the day there will be a time for sport to return but May/June is too soon imho.

Conversely if they did it would be disastrous for them as their audience would desert in droves.

If it's safe for players to get all hot and sweaty, tackling each other, pulling shirts, holding each other at corners, breathing over each other, than it's safe for fans to sit in the stadium.

If it's not safe for fans to sit in a stadium how can it be safe to play football ?
