Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I have reffed a few behind closed doors games in the past and there was intensity at all. Yes, they may have been friendlies but even pre season games had more intensity. Did Sunderland/Boro when neither had had a game for a few weeks & it had been arranged to maintain match sharpness. It was about 66% of a normal non league game. I think this will happen with a lot of the meaningless mid table games

If broadcasters and sponsors can get out of paying £100sm they may well pull the plug on football clubs. The effect could be disastrous.

It's one thing in the midst of a crisis the government supporting business and workers but that wont last.

There's loads of industries facing potential disaster as a result of keeping people safe. Why is football different?

If there is no relegation, teams from around 10th down won’t give a monkeys where they finish. The natural intensity just goes. Players can’t help it. It will become ridiculous. It’s only potential loss of ££ keeping the PL interested in this.

Another point is say we get to the champions league final if it restarts, how shite would it be to win it? Barely counts a win with no fans, no proper 2nd leg with Madrid, no semi final etc.

i remember when we were forced to play Olympiacos bcd Nuno was pretty outspoken he said football is entertainment to play without fans is pointless, and playing football while people are dying was ludicrous. Nothing has changed since then people are still dying and it’s still ludicrous to play football in the midst of a pandemic.
I’m not sure he’d be keen on leaving the relative safety of Portugal for a hair brained scheme to finish the season, yes we may have a chance of champions league but who knows when champions league will be able to be played anyway. Just ‘give’ the dippers the title *and let’s start a new season when it’s safe and the players aren’t scared of putting themselves and their families at risk.

I agree with everything until the part where it says just give the dippers the title. I wouldn't give that scum the steam off my shit.

The restart date they have in mind is the 8th June. Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga preparations underway so why should the Premier League not be looking at this?

I don't know why some fans have some entrenched views as to whether it's safe to play and train. You are not being asked to do anything.

Footballers are isolating anyway. They would just be expected to do so as a group for the duration of their league season. I think that's really difficult to achieve but he situation is changing every week.

I've been ignoring this topic so I don't know if the sponsorship and broadcasting losses have been worked out yet. Is it a real issue or not? If the broadcasting and commercial deals are at risk, then that means many football clubs are also at risk.

Suspect and hope CL goes ahead but PL looks very awkward. For City fans, the PL holds no excitement at all but I don't get the strong feelings that some are expressing. Many of you will be going back to work by the 8th June in some shape or form. Footballers are no different in that respect. They wont be getting crammed on tubes and trains. They'll be traveling in Range Rovers and be training out in the open in the Summer weather. Maybe it isn't safe but I don't see why you wouldn't explore it and look at it.

I'd be disappointed if they don't restart the Champions League and I am sure the players will be too. That's definitely possible.

We been asked to either stay in for 3 months or only allowed our once a day for exercise or essentials like going to the pharmacy or shopping and when doing so keep a 2m distance.

Are footballers different to anyone else?

I know it’s a forum and it’s a talking point but reading that to me seems you are ok for footballers to put there live at risk for a none essential activity!?

I wish City would join the not on board list
Unfortunately we can't, not without the media spinning the agenda against the club.

It doesn't matter what the intentions are behind it; player safety, not using NHS/medical resources unnecessarily, competition integrity or just because we don't feel it's the correct thing to do. The media will somehow turn that into the corrupt dirty oil rich Arabs cheating again and trying to sports wash the money.

Assuming it is safe and everything. Why would you want to watch it? Football without fans in the stadium will be awful and I'm sure the players will find that out soon enough.

It'll just seem like a practice match just hearing the players and coaches shouting

No they are not different to anyone else. That's the point. There are discussions going on about everyone returning. The latest is that primary-age school children may return on June 1st.

I am not looking forward to watching football on TV in front of empty stadiums but I don't see why some football fans are offended by the thought. Disinterested maybe.
