Corruption in English football?

That's quite telling.

I'm squarely in the yes camp. If you look as some of the decisions, and patterns of play in certain games it's difficult to conclude there is anything other than manipulation in order to try and influence outcomes.

Even something simple, such as the referee being told to try and keep the game competitive for as long as possible (for example not sending the Wolves player off for the challenge on Gundogan last week which ticked every box as a Red card offence). I'm doubtful the referee would have hesitated to send the player off had roles been reversed.

Of course

Games can also be influenced without obvious drama. The referee can just keep stopping the flow of the game, which usually benefits one team and frustrates one team

You see it in boxing all the time. Reminds me of that Joshua v Parker fight a while ago, that ref was clearly instructed to not let Parker hear Joshua, he would interfere and break up the action as soon as Parker got close and could work on the inside. They knew at range AJ had the reach advantage, so the referee made sure the fight was at range. It was blatant.

I believe similar happens in football all the time. Referees can dictate the tempo and flow of the game, they can frustrate one team etc, there’s no guarantee it’s going to always effect the final score but they can certainly give the game a nudge in a certain direction.

Every game 50/50 goes to the opposing team players can continuously make fouls on one player all game and not get carded

It absolutely happened to us in the CL final. The referee appointment both influenced our selection (Ferni would have walked) and the game was stop start in the second half. Pep was fuming and knew what had been done to us.

Agree with this perspective. A season or two ago certain refs always seemed to get in the way of the passing channels on the left of our build up play. A few seconds delay is all the opposition need to regain their shape. These days it seems the ref moves faster than our forward play!

While the officiating is top notch, just listen to the commentary n’all… you don’t ever hear our commentators, co-commentators and pundits talking about the sides of the game that need eradicating from football. They just talk bollocks in barely comprehensible English.
