Could City help out on this?

Easy stuff for Sunday mornings

Football card.
Raffle (bottle of wine etc)
Bun and cake table.

It's surprising how quick money comes in.

Junior football club bosses have spoken of their ‘devastation’ after a treasurer left them virtually penniless by systematically stealing more than £6,000 from club accounts.

By the time an audit exposed Sharon Tomlinson’s thieving, Wythenshawe outfit Benchill Celtic FC were all but skint – with just £5.96 in the bank.

Tomlinson, 41, sobbed as Manchester magistrates were told how she had taken advantage of her position in charge of the club’s finances.

Outraged club chiefs told the M.E.N how the side has been left struggling to pay off eye-watering debts and young players have been without new kit and equipment for two years after Tomlinson syphoned off the cash.

Colin Moore, who took over as treasurer following Tomlinson’s arrest in September last year, said: “It’s had a massive impact on the club and after nine months of hard work we’re just about getting back on a steady financial footing.

“The most disappointing part of it is how it’s affected the kids – we want them to have a pride in the club and the community they represent and this has really damaged that.

"We always strive to keep costs down so as many kids as play as possible and some families really struggle to find the money sometimes and to know that money was just disappearing is devastating.”

Prosecutor Katherine Eccles said there was no system or any proper management of accounts in place.

The club had several teams and money was handed over on a monthly basis for Tomlinson, a cleaner at Manchester Airport, to bank. Miss Eccles said: “There was no real record of these transactions.”

Miss Eccles said the audit revealed that between January and September last year Tomlinson had fleeced the club to the tune £6,343.30.

Tomlinson, of Delwood Gardens, Wythenshawe, pleaded guilty to stealing the cash and will be sentenced on June 27. She was granted bail.

John Mitchell, defending, said the thefts were committed ‘against a backdrop of financial desperation’.

Tomlinson owed money to finance companies and lenders and her debts had ‘spiralled out of control’, he said.

Mr Mitchell went on “She didn’t have the experience or savvy to be a treasurer and after a while she began robbing Peter to pay Paul”.

Tomlinson, it was said, had had a long standing link with the club and her sons had played there. One son was killed in a road accident 11 years ago and there was a memorial cup in his name.

“She wants to pay back the money no matter how long it takes” said Mr Mitchell.

Now idea how they could be helped with Kits and such. Any ideas people?

It is only 6 grand, just have a whip round in the local boozer or get out your checkbook.

Where I coach in Germany, each youth team from U7's to 18's has it's own kitty, made up of money, generated by the organisation of team BBQ's plus a 25 euro monthly payment, which is actually meant for the coach, but is added to the kitty. At one point, we had over 1,000 euros in ours. We were able to pay for tracksuits and go on team trips. Kits were donated by local sponsors. What's happened here is terrible for Benchill. However, it could be a blessing in disguise, but they're gonna have to get out in the local community for financial help, plus bring in new sponsors from the local area.

Manchester boys are struggling right now, a member of the management team was on the radio Sunday, saying it very difficult to carry on, and wanted more support for utd and had a go a city for never helping out past or present...
If any old Manchester boys would like to donate or give their time to raise some cash, phone
BBC RADIO MANCHESTER, and they will pass on his number....
Didn't think it was a good idea to give us stick in public, !!!
City can't be the begging bowl for all local good courses..
I'll donate, only out of loyalty to Manchester, not because of the guilt trip that's being heaped onto my club...!!!!!

Manchester Boys should be the cream of the Mancunian youth. They should be funded and supported by the local F.A. They should be going round scouting all the local talent at the local clubs (which there is a severe lack of)and should be working closely with City. Not yoonited, coz Trafford should have it's own local F.A.
I find it fookin shockin and, it gets my piss boiling, to hear that they are skint.

Unfortunately this is not for City to help out they're not a charity so I'm afraid I agree with above I'm sure they can raise funds if the people associated with the team get their heads together.

I thought Manchester boys folded two years ago?
At least there was someone involved there that said that no way could they raise £1500 to continue pay rent for the pitch or summat..

My sons team are having a tournament next week. There'll be catering stalls, action photos, a few kiddies rides, bouncy castle etc. a lot of parents give up their time to help organise and run these type if events.

How much are you needing to raise? Or is it just a steady trickle of cash needed?

We've noticed that financially, certain clubs struggle and others don't and I think a large chunk of success is down to how involved the parents get. Our lot are there for the lads on weekends and pretty much everybody knows each other too. Some teams seem to struggle to even get the parents to watch on a Sunday morning and its no surprise that those teams struggle.

I don't think it's up to Manchester City FC to put right the illegal antics of some greedy woman. If the club are in a financial mess, firstly, they can claim criminal compensation off the woman. She might have spent it and not have a pot to piss in, but that's not the point. They would get a judgement against her and perhaps if she got a job there would be attachment of earnings etc. So from that point of view the JFC can do something. Although they have been naive, the club have, to a certain extent been the architects of their own downfall by not having the correct procedures in place.

From a fund raising point of view, other posters are right, the club and it's players, parents and committee should well be able to raise a decent amount. What about the players doing car washing to raise funds perhaps or any one of a million ways to raise the cash.

City get millions of requests to help them and have a charities co ordinator full time who deals with such requests. Given this, I hardly think the club should get flak for not forking out. They will also provide items, for a cost, that would make much more than the initial outlay at an auction perhaps. A signed shirt, for example can be bought for a reasonable amount, but properly auctioned would raise a good few hundred.

With regard to City helping abroad, I'm not sure that needs any justification. It's not just City putting money into projects abroad, it's in partnerships with other agencies and is also with a view to expanding the brand overseas. Not only that, but it's also with an eye on developing players too, which, at the end of the day, is what the club is about. If the next Messi came from a City sponsored project from a ghetto in LA or NY, who will complain then?

Having been involved with local football. within the Mid Cheshire Sunday League, for many a year, I am surprised that the Committee of this Club has not asked to see the Finances of the Club on a regular basis.
We held weekly Meetings and on a regular basis, for Meetings to not only discuss finances, but to view and audit the Accounts.
Sorry but the Committee are equally as accountable as the Treasurer !!

Coach Under 13s.Lack of control by the club, they just need to get working hard to generate cash again.

Snack table - tea, coffee, buns, biscuits. There's usually loads of other brothers and sisters come watch the kids play. Mums can bake I'm sure. Penguin biscuits etc. vending machine packs of coffee, hot choc, bovril etc. This was run solely by the mums and was the main team earner until the clubhouse with kitchen was built.

Raffle - I'm sure the parents helpers etc could chip in with prizes. Easy money. Turn a £3 bottle of wine into £20.

Football card - quid a go. £25 to winner. £15 in the kitty.

How big a club is it? Would it be worth letting a pitch for a burger van?

Sponsors. Small local companies could get there names on shirts, shorts club costs etc.
Hit up larger companies who could afford to buy the kit. The boys usually get at least a couple if years out of a shirt.
Advertising. Wherever there space where people go, there's room for advertising. Sell the space!
