Could Gazza have been better than Zidane?

Had gazza not been so loopy and fulfilled all his potential would he have achieved what zidane did? This sparked a huge debate at worl yesterday, just wondered what bluemooners thought?

Unfortunately if he would have signed for united as he nearly did, he would probably have been one of the greatest footballers to ever live, but then he would have been a different Gazza and no one would have held him in the same regard and with the same affection cause he would have been one of them...

If it had not of been for that stupid tackle of Gary Charles in the FA Cup Final i reckon he would of been right up there
After that he was never the same,we only saw flashes of genius(Scotland Euro 96 springs to mind)
A wasted talent

But was it not the case that it was Gazza'a stupid tackle?

I really disagree with this belief that if Gascoigne joined United, he would be a superstar, and be on his best behaviour. The guy is a simpleton from a council estate in Dunston. It is very doubtful he would have listened to Ferguson, or have taken onboard any advice. I think he would be exactly the same, and end up being booted out, which would have harmed his reputation. His problems began when he was a kid, with the brother of his best mate being knocked down by a car, and his father getting a brain hemorrhage, not when he joined Spurs, though the bright lights of London didn't help.

I don't know, Ferguson knows how to handle a personality. We've all heard of the party Sharpe had, and Taggart going round to sort it right out. I think Gazza would have had his head sorted out by Ferguson, and without the temptations London has to offer. Still would never have been as good as Zidane though.
'Simpleton', not heard that for years!
