Could Gazza have been better than Zidane?

I loved Gazza, and if you like him i emplore you to read his book, gives you an insight to the madness and what he has gone through (like the loss of his best mate's little bro as mentioned before). I dont think Baconface could have sorted him out, i think years of skilled councelling hasnt helped, a whiskeynosed wanker ranting at you isnt going to do the trick... proabably quite the opposite, i think he might have gone further off the rails because he wouldnt have been playing... thats when all his troubles started, when he didnt play (admittedly mostly due to his own mistakes). The pitch was probably when things didnt effect him as much mentally, however, his OCD still made him kick the floor before breaking into a run, so much so he readily lost the nail on his big toe... mad as a bag of frogs but great value

Nowhere near the level of Zidane who in my opinion is the best of his generation in a way Maradona, Cruyff and Pele (although i never really saw limp dick play) were in theirs

IMO, yes.
I watched some matches where Zidane just couldn't be arsed, where as Gazza would have played football for nothing. His enthusiasm had no boundaries

Gazza was a genius absolutely world class.

I keep reading that Fergie could have stopped him drinking and put him on the straight and narrow, but as a Spurs fan I don't buy this.

When Paul Mcgrath liked the tipple it sent Fergie mad and he shipped him off

Beckham going out with his misses pissed Fergie off too and he got rid

If Gazza didn't get that injury against Charles then who knows?

Here is a wonderful comp of him

A lot of football fans seem to think that Zidane was untouchable . And while he did look untouchable for France at times. I remember often when he came up against Roy Keane for Man United or Ireland Keane dominated him . As good as keane was i couldn't see handling maradonna, messi, cryuff , ronaldinho, etc.

He had a suspect temperament and mentality . So if you knew how to play against him like keane did you could limit his influence .

Another thing that is never acknowledged about zidane is that he wasn't nearly as effective at club level .

And i find it maddening to think that his admirers have up there with Maradonna, messi , pele , cryuff etc.

I would say that Zidane was undoubtedly one of the best players of his generation . On a par with figo, rivaldo etc.

As far Gazza . Well zidane had the better career . I think even after his career changing injury with Tottenham . Gazza went to serie a and when he was fit and played he often ran games for Lazio . And remember this was when serie a was the best league in the world . He also ran games for England at times and this is after his injury.

Different kind of players anyway. Gascoigne was a box to box midfielder, Zidane was a number 10.

Gascoigne would have never been able to contain himself long enough to play in three champions league finals.

Always winds me up the Zidane thing. Wildly overrated player. Perhaps a better manager.. ?

Gazza’s personality and attitude killed his career but if it wasn’t for his personality and attitude he wouldn’t have been the player he was
