Could You Live Without A Car?

Great post OP. Yes I could easily live without a car. I go everywhere on my bike anyway including work. However, I sometimes need my car for work as I have to pick up large goods from B&Q/Wickes etc or take sh1t to the tip. But I only do 3000 miles a year and about 5000 on my bike. As much as I like Greta my dream retirement would be to travel around Europe in a camper van with my bike and just go off on daily bike rides exploring before heading off and repeating the next day somewhere else.

I had to do without it when i broke my shoulder , a year out and then when i broke my ankle , eight weeks out and i absolutely hated it , had to travel to the hospital every week which cost a fortune in taxi's, not being able to just nip up to the shop or bank or usual things was awful

I dont go far but no thanks , if you are fit and able to walk and travel then i would

If people got rid of their cars there would be more demand for public transport and the buses would be more frequent.
Electric cars suit a lot of people, but not everyone and they are not as environmentally friendly as is made out.
The problem is the option has to be there in advance.

You can just say to someone who has a bus service that runs every 2 hrs and then doesn't connect with the trains so there is another delay of 25 mins, to get out of their car. If you look at most bus companies in rural areas they have cut back on the service because it isnt financially lucrative enough not because there isnt demand

In my case if I drive to my office its 35mins, if I catch the bus and train its 90 mins each way at best, if I have a meeting that overruns which is not uncommon that could extend to over 2hrs each way. Then theres the issue of having to go to site to do "Director safety tours" which to be honest adds no value, but the business seems to think its important. These are often out of normal working hours so good luck catching public transport to be on site at 11pm and back off site at 5am.

My sense of direction is awful so I’ll take a taxi if I need to be somewhere at a specific time. I’ve waxed lyrical about cabbies on another thread but some are truly awful and should not be on the roads.

The one who thought Bradford Park Avenue FC were Bradford Bulls Rugby was particularly special. After about three turnings, he confessed he had no idea where he was going.
