Could You Live Without A Car?

Yea, can't drive. My other half has a car and it rarely leaves our drive Mon-Fri. She commutes into central London via train during week. We use her car to get shopping, visit her mother in care home or for days out at weekend.

Not a chance unfortunately.

The biggest thing people can do however, is reduce air miles. My family haven't been on a holiday abroad for maybe 5 years, so I've money in the bank to some extent in terms of carbon footprint.

However in terms of the car, not a chance. I work from home 3 days a week and walk to the office the other 2 days, but...

Monday evening younger child's footballing training.
Tuesday evening elder child's football training.
Wednesday evening elder child's football training.
Thursday evening younger child's football training.
Saturday football matches for both girls.

All those things are really difficult to manage without cars, the transport system would mean too many changes, too long a journey on most occasions. That said, we did a carbon footprint check at work and mine came out below average - mainly due to making zero flights.

No. I have Asperger’s and hate the noise and crowding on public transport, plus it’s not flexible enough. We love to go on holidays and days out around the uk, no idea how people manage to get from the Cheshire suburbs to say rural Norfolk with suitcases, etc without a car. That would be incredibly stressful.

I'd love to, the worst part of my day is the hour in the morning and hour in the evening sat staring at the car in front crawling at 5mph. Sadly would need to either quit my job or move house which I am not prepared to do. I would love a London style transport system in Manchester though.

Im with @KnaresboroughBlue, not a chance unfortunately due to the lack of bus services and their integration with trains in rural areas.

If I lived in or very near to a city then, rather ironically with my username, I would quite happily do without. That said my electric car is still on order and should hopefully appear in 3 months time after waiting for over a year.

Do I think Gretta is a cxnt, no, but its an idealist view which requires government, business and people all to pull in the same direction.

I cycle pretty much every day to most places I need to go within a eight mile radius. Apart from shit roads and minimal cycle lanes there is far too many bell end's driving around at speed and off their heads on weed . You can smell the car before it passes. I would say it's just too unsafe for many people to bin the car and take this option. I would hate to rely on public transport. Germany is great for cycling and bizarrely you probably have more chance of getting hit by a bike than a car in the citys, especially when crossing a cycle paths which run parallel to most footpaths.
